Excltment At ATL This Morning?

Sat Feb 25, 2006 5:31 am

Hi All,

I was flying out of ATL this morning several things caught my attention:

1) The fire alarm at the other end of the (D) concourse kept going off... I think it went off a total of three times during the time I was waiting for the flight (no one really seemed to pay any attention at all to it, and since the strobes in our part of the concourse weren't going off I wasn't about to let myself on to the ramp*)

2) After we boarded and the jetway was pulled back, the captain made an announcement like "Well, folks, we've been told that there was a little bit of confusion in the bag room...whatever that means...it's been sorted out, but the bags from this flight were there. They're on their way now, but given the size of the airport we're going to hold tight for about ten minutes"

3) After landing in CLE, the woman behind me commented that when she was going through security they "made an announcement about an emergency of some kind and we should just stay where we were, but I figured whatever it was I'd be safer underground, so I just kept going"

Anyone know what was going on? Were any of the events related?

Nothing on http://wxia.com so I'm not sure if it was that big a deal. They usually have a special reporter on the scene if someone has a extended sneezing session in the terminal so it can't be too much to worry about. I'm betting a few different things happened today.

1. The alarm in D Concourse-Doesn't surprise me. I see it in the DL concourse now and then where someone will forget to turn off the alarm and then just prop the door open.

2. Baggage Room mixup-Probably a broken belt or a coupld of carts tipped over.

3. Security Announcement-Most likely Shaniqua had to tell D'Angelo that she was going to be going to Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles for dinner. Or perhaps Mr. Magoo (seriously the guy looks like his glasses are an inch thick and he had his face 3 inches from the screen looking at the stuff going through!) was back behind one of the X-Ray machines and confused some lady's sexual toy for a stick of dynamite.

Perhaps they found some more rats.....

I remember about a year ago they had to partially seal off D-North for a "bomb". They made folks move to the spine and to the end of D-North, then they made everyone go down D-South and shut down the shops in the spine (which is where I was at, myself and some coworkers managed to get to the escalators and I went over to E to check on some of the shops on that route). Turned out the "bomb" was the old coin mechanism for one of the newspaper boxes. They had just replaced them and the guy left the old one where the papers usually go.

As a member of the African American community....Thanks... /end sarcasm.

The fact of the matter is that:

A) Delays happen. It's just a part of flying you have to deal with
B) DL isn't exactly the most prompt airline
C) Atlanta is a zoo, avoid flying through it as much as humanly possible
D) Where there are delays, there will be conspiracy theories. Condense the nonsense and just evaluate a situation(especially flying THESE days) as squarely as possible, and use deductive reasoning for yourself.

Very well said. And you are right about ATL being a zoo. I swear there are more folks in the Concourses now than before 9/11.

Sorry if I offended but it is just an accurate representation of the pitiful TSA employees at ATL. They pay more attention to where they are going with friends or recapping their night before than actually screening passengers.

Sounds like a typical day at a major airport to me.

It's a damn good restuarant. Just because I'm a goofy white guy doesn't mean I eat all my meals at Friday's or Applebees. I enjoy ethnic foods quite a bit. Plus my BBQ is real...slow smoked all day. Not the standard NY view (not saying that is you by the way) of slapping a steak on the grill as that would be...grilling. I was recapping an actual conversation I heard one day while going through security at ATL.
