sounds very good, well they sell seats directly or are all seats sold to tour-operators...

only the depature times are looking strange, why should avianca turn-around so long in PMV?

regards
Avianca

Yes, great. But we do need them in order to get to the US now  duck

I am just a little bit afraid about the number of hotel rooms on the island. It is already hard for touroperators to find them now. and it will be getting worse and worse. And there is only few consrtuction (due to unclear situation towards private property). This will cause prices to rise.
Remember that Air Asturias, Conviasa, Aeroflot amongst other want to start operations.

Congratulations to both AV and PMV! I was always wondering how big the airport in PMV is, does anyone have photos of the airport's terminal? Is it comparable in size as our airport in CUR? I have linked a few photos I took of our airport with the new terminal under construction (see links below):

http://myaviation.net/search/photo_search.php?id=00374134&size=large

http://myaviation.net/search/photo_search.php?id=00374133&size=large

I would like to see photos of PMV as I have no idea how big it is. How about the number of airlines flying to PMV, which airlines fly to PMV (both scheduled and charter flights)?

There once was a post that I can't find now with some pics of the renovation update in PMV.

I will try to find them and post them. Anyway, expect un update on that by the end of next week.

But the airport is much smaller than CUR. It will be handling aprox. 1,2 Mio passengers this year (about 1,0 Mio last year and 0,9 Mio 2004).

Hola Chiguire,

Thank you very much for the photos. The way I see it, PMV is at least the same size as CUR, the PMV new terminal even looks larger! Wow, amazing and nice. Is aircraft photography there good? Or do police authorities tell you to leave immediately when they see you taking photos? How about the locations, are there nice locations at the (new) terminal to take photos? I would love to see photos such as the last photo you posted above. In other words, a real new terminal with real aircraft instead of scale models Big grin

At this time you can take as much photos as you want. Nobody will bother you.

So do I !

I am not sure about that. As you can see, everything is under construction. I took the pictures in November 05 and it will take at least until summer until parts of the new terminal are in service.

BTW: The airport is managed by Unique IBC. Unique is the company managing Zurich airport and IBC is from Chile.

Very interesting news.

AV has been recently seeing a considerable capacity boost in its short-haul fleet, which is adequate for the airline's needs during weekdays.

On weekends, though, Avianca heavily reduces domestic flying, especially on shuttle services, which translates in quite a significant MD-83 availability during Saturday and Sundays.

This service, together with the already-existant once-weekly service to PUJ, will enable them to continue making better use of the MDs during those days.

Guys looks like they are only officializing their charter operation to PMV. I can't book a seat using AV's website. I don't know for how long has AV been flying to PMV, but I do remember taxiing behind an AV MD80 exactly 2 years ago in PMV.

Anyways this is great news for the most important market in the Caribbean/Northern South America which is Venezuela-Colombia. Looks like carriers are targeting unserved secondaries cities in both countries, let's hope this trend continues to grow.

Well I dont know about locations to take pictures in what will be the new facilities but I do know a place in the road to playa El Yaque that pass by PMV runway. I used to go there at sunset with a bunch of friends to photograph...just that you have to use precaution there since people usually drive like nuts on the island.........EDGAR.

Yes, may be that soon this flight is on a scheduled basis and can be booked though the GDS - I hope so, this makes PMV accesible through the whole AV network from UIO, GYE, PTY........
And: I finally wanted to post something positive after the 2/22-shock.

These are supposed to be charters, but they have now been postponed several times and I hope they don't materialize in the end.

Yes, they have a weekly A310 PRG-PMV, I think on Wednesday.

I guess it's the price level and the huge number of 3-star (cheap) hotels offering all inclusive rates sarting at 15 US$ per person to the touroperator (e.g. Portofino Hotel).

Quoting A388 (Reply 12):
Why don't they fly to other Caribbean islands such as SXM, AUA, SJU, KIN/MBJ?

SXM - too expensive
AUA - much too expensive
SJU - much much too expensive
MBJ - too little number of hotels in cheap categorie and too spread over the island (high transfer costs impacting the package price)

Quoting A388 (Reply 12):

If I get everything together:
Condor 4xweekly from FRA (767)
Martinair 3xweekly from AMS (767)
Martinair 1xweekly from CPH (767)
Martinair 1xweekly from BLL (767)
CSA 1xweekly from PRG (A310)
Air Finnland 1x weekly from HEL (767?)
First Choice 1x weekly from LON (767)*
First Choice 1xweekly from MAN (767)*
Air Transat 2x weekly from YTO (A310/A330)
Air Transat 1x weekly from YUL (A310)

* the 2 First Choice flights are combined in summer. LON every 14 days and MAN every 14 days. Air Transat also cancells one weekly ex YTO in summer season.

In addition in summer we get charters fom Colombia (e.g. the two mentioned by AV and P5), SCL, VVI (Aerosur), EZE, SAO/MAO, LIM, UIO (Aerogal) etc.
But here I still don't know the schedules.

There are planned flights from Air Asturias 2xweekly 767 for summer from MAD or OVD as well as those mentioned MOW services. The Edelweiss flight from ZRH seems not to take place this summer due to aircraft shortage.

AA was not allowed to operate their two weekly SJU-PMV but Aeropostal say they want to start PMV-MIA in April.

So a lot of interesting things going around. The only problem is that the hotel beds are not enough. Resulting in local government plans to reactivate hotels (e.g. former Concorde with 500 rooms/1000 beds and the former Decameron) on their own. Those hotels would be run by the government.
I am a bit afraid of that as the experiences with the first state-run hotel, the Kamarata in Costa Azul show that the quality offered is extremely low.

Wow, that's a lot of widebody aircraft to PMV. The way I see it PMV is much bussier than CUR hence the bigger airport terminal PMV will get. Here in CUR we only have the following airlines:

KLM 7xweekly from AMS (744)
ArkeFly 5xweekly from AMS (763)
American Airlines 14xweekly from MIA (738)
American Eagle 3xweekly from SJU (AT7)
Continental Airlines 1xweekly from EWR (737NG)
Avianca 3xweekly from BOG (M83)
Aeropostal 7xweekly from CCS/SDQ (M82)
Aserca Airlines 5xweekly from MAR (DC9)
Avior 14xweekly from MAR/VLN (B1900D)
Dutch Antilles Express 49xweekly from BON/AUA/SXM/VLN (AT4)
Surinam Airways 7xweekly from PMB/MIA/SDQ (M82)
TAP Air Portugal 1xweekly from FNC (A313 charter/seasonal)
AeroGal 1xweekly from UIO/GYE (73S charter/seasonal)
SkyService 1xweekly from YYZ (A320 charter/seasonal)
Miami Air 1xweekly from Florida (738 charter/seasonal)
Falcon Air 1xweekly from MIA (72S charter/seasonal)
Rutaca 3xweekly from Venezuela (73S charter/seasonal)

This is about it. I'm not sure about the frequencies of the charter flights as the number of flights can be different each year. So compared to PMV we get far less widebody aircraft but more narrowbody aircraft I think. PMV seems to be a bussier airport than CUR.

Roger

I am not sure about that.....as I said it will reach 1.2 million passengers this year.

A remark to your list: Aeropostal at the moment operates CCS-CUR-SDQ. So you can also count an additional CUR-SDQ service with VH. However this will change in summer being a "terminator" service CCS-CUR-CCS.

In terms of other international services PMV also has Rutaca 737 and Avior 737 charters as well as some regular B1900 Avior and Dash 7 / 737 services to POS.

The domestic routes are pretty limited to about 20 flights to CCS, 1 daily BLA-VLN-MAR service (Aeropostal) and several turboprop flights to the mainland with Dash 7 (Conviasa), Beach 1900 (Avior) and Cessna Caravan (Rutaca). There are also some touristic daytour services to Canaima, Tucupita and Los Roques operated by Sasca (Beach 1900 or Caravan), Aerotuy (Dash7), Rainbow Air (Caravan), Comeravia (Let410) and Transaven (Islander).

Another question relateds to CUR Roger:

Why do you think there are maily Dutch tourists in CUR from Europe ? I mean if it comes to language Margarita should have a lot of flight to Spain, but there isn't even one (yet).
CUR is not that expensive as AUA.
The attempt from VIASA in the early 90s with a weekly MUC-CUR service failed after only one season. And I don't think it failed only because the operator went bancrupt....

Yes, you are right. ALL DE flights stop on the way to PMV either in TAB or GND. But they are nonstop back.

Why have you only been here for a weekend ? Did you only get those 99 Euro tickets for this short stay ?

The reason CUR is most popular with Dutch tourists is simply because we are part of the Netherlands Kingdom. This also explains why we have a lot of Dutch people working/living here as well. You can compare it to the French, British and Hispanic Caribbean islands, most French tourists go to the French Caribbean islands, while most English tourists go to English Caribbean islands and Spaniards prefer Spanish speaking islands. However, unlike other Caribbean islands, CUR isn't that well known in Europe as we see a small number of English, Swedish and German tourists going to CUR for vacation. This explains why CUR mainly receives Dutch tourists. The number of other European tourists to CUR is increasing so I hope we will see charter flights from Germany and the U.K. in the future. Time will tell....

Thanks for the correction SOUTHAMERICA, AV used to operate 3x weekly flights to CUR, guess this has been decreased to 2. But I have to admit AV flew to CUR 3x weekly a very long time ago, I thaught it still was the same. I also forgot about Aires, they do fly to CUR like you mentioned.

Right, currently AV serves the Netherland Antilles with 7 weekly services; 5 of them go to AUA, and the other two, on Mondays and Thursdays IIRC, go to CUR.

Is that staterun now then? I stayed there years ago and it was fine. Small but OK and as we came by ferry we had our own car to go to the beach. My sister-in-law used to live in Costa Azul so we would always stay in that part of the island.
I love the International Village, new part. Little bungalows each with their own private terrace. Margarita is  Cool I even took my dog with me one time, AVIH on MP she loved the beaches too!

wasnt the CCS-AUA service not decreased some time ago to at least some weekly flights (2 I think) to B757-200?

so I can imagine the route is not doeing such well (I can imagine the fares are too high)

I would like to know that too, as far as I remember RG operates night flights to AUA using the MD11 which I also don't understand. Why did RG use the MD11 on this route, it seems like too much aircraft capacity for the route unless most people go to CCS instead of AUA which might be the case.

RG operates AUA via CCS. RG flies GIG-GRU-CCS 4 x week and GIG-GRU-CCS-AUA 2 x week, all with the B757. RG faces a/c shortage and therefore had to downgrade CCS from MD11 to B757. AUA is operated byv RG because seats are solt to travel agency in advance, plus RG also has 5th freedom rights CCS-AUA.

I dont know why RG selected AUA (among the Caribbean destinations), but it must be part of the deal with the travel agency. I'm sure RG would do better flying to other places with stronger demand such as HAV or POS or even CUR.

TAM is about to start MAO-CCS daily F100 sometime in 2006.

Rgs,
