US Airways Ending PIT-MIA?

Sat Feb 25, 2006 11:27 am

I did a search on this but couldn't find anything.

I just got the chance to download last weekend's timetable update, and looking through this summer's PIT-Florida offering, I see PIT-MIA is now just a same-flight-number service through CLT (737-400).

It looks like the flight's last day is May 6.

I'm not sure if the summer schedule has been finalised yet, which is why I'm asking.

Strange seeing a route that had multiple daily 757's on it at one point a few years ago ... now down to just AA Eagle's one ERJ-140. And with no AA mainline left in PIT, I don't see much of an upgrade coming.

PIT is really get the short of the stick with the majors esp US. Really sad, but i guess they don't really have another choice. Can't operate unprofitably just because they feel sorry for the station. Having hubs in the same state, is kinda crazy....

This is crazy if they really are ending this route. Maybe E-190's can fly it better.

AA when they began the PIT-MIA back in early 2004 originally used an MD-80 on that route. A few monthes later it was down graded to an EMB-145 on Eagle. Eagle has been operating this route ever since then and put an EMB-140 at one point in the past couple of years, due to what i am only going to guess, was to combat weight restrictions on the 145. I imagine that when Eagle operated the EMB-145 on this route, that it was almost impossible to operate the flight with all 50 seats occupied.

To what I have heard, that the flights on this route are often oversold. It would make sense to me for AA to scheadule a second flight or to upgrade this route to a 700 or to put mainline back on it. Especially if US is canceling their own nonstop flight on this route.

I thought the Daily US Flight went to a Saturday only non-stop in both directions for the Summer.

Captaink, I agree with you on PIT getting screwed here. They've been getting screwed for some time. Maybe WN or FL will add service PIT-FLL(WN) or FL (PIT-MIA). I think both Southwest and Airtran said that they wanted to expand service out of Pittsburgh. I know Southwest has, but I am not sure about Airtran...

You're right, there is a Saturday-only 737-300. I didn't check Saturdays at first.  Smile

Still, the flight's been year-round in the summer in years past -- even last summer when the focus city was in place. AA has a second RJ frequency on Saturday as well...I wonder if that will become daily.

FL already serves PIT-FLL on Saturdays. AE will probably upgrade PIT-MIA because their service does extremely well.

US put their eggs in the FLL basket with the mini-hub. I've heard MIA is difficult to work with (IE corrupt), while FLL is looking for more traffic. when I visit family in the Keys, I almost always fly into FLL. Easy access to the turnpike, really only adds 20 minutes to the drive to MTH. More choice at FLL usually equates to better fares as well.

Yeah, PIT-MIA isn't a huge loss. AE will continue to operate the route and from what i've heard US will continue the route on Sat/Sun.

Oh, I didn't realize that. Wait a minute, I think I mentioned that in another post about Airtran...  silly

For a second I didn't know what you meant by AE, (AE is the Anet code for some airline in Taiwan. PIT has no Asian service...) Then it dawned on me: AE = American Eagle... Of course... I suppose they'll go mainline then? Maybe a 737 or A319 on this route? How is FL PIT-FLL doing though on the weekends?

I wouldn't expect to see mainline from AA. AA dose not have narrow body Airbus aircraft in the fleet. No A319s.

AirTran doesn't do to great obviously with the service being weekend only. FL was supposed to go daily with the route but it never happened. I guess we will see what American Eagle/AA have in store.

Oh, yeah. They have those MD-80s... If they don't go mainline, then I guess that AA will add another commuter route; CRJ more than likely...

I think I should have answered my own question. It's a shame that there is no demand to warent daily service FL PIT-FLL. I guess we will see what AA/Eagle will do. Isn't FL supposed to announce any expansion in PIT? Or was it WN... I read somewhere that both were to add more destinations and/or gates... I'm not sure which ones; it seems that the O&Ds in all the markets have been satiated for the time being...
