Connecting In EWR

Sat Feb 25, 2006 11:07 pm

I know someone who is flying GLA-EWR-MCO and back in the coming weeks and have a few questions about the connecting flight.

He has an hour after landing to catch the connecting flight. So is this enough time and is EWR easy to navigate?

If it's just 1 hour, it sounds a bit tight. Is this individual a US citizen? If not, the custom's lines may be longer and move slower.

What airlines? EWR has more than one terminal. Is it CO/CO?

CO International Arrivals and Most domestic flights are handled at Terminal C, when you exit the Customs and Immigration hall there is a baggage re-check. Also immediatley when you exit the Hall there is an escalator that takes you directly to the security screening for the Concourses.

I fly BRU-EWR-FLL almost each month........the hour connection time is rather tight, especially since your friend in not a US citizen. If his flight arrives in EWR a couple of minutes late, and/or there are lines at immigration (usually there are lines, not terrible, but sometimes a few minutes wait) and he is checking-in baggage which must be reclaimed at EWR, walked through customs (hopefully he wont be stopped), and re-checked, he will have a problem. Lastly, he must re-clear security before getting back into the departure area and get to his gate for the MCO flight (the CO terminal at EWR is rather big with long walkways to the gates). The CO flights from Europe arrive in groups, if the GLA flight gets in before many of the other arrive - I looked, GLA gets in at 1140, its one of the first arrivals, it should be OK, if your friend misses his 1240 connex, there is a 753 departure @ 1425 and another 753 departure @1520, thus lots of seats on alternative flights.

I am a US citizen, I have done EWR connections in 25-30 minutes when te BRU flight has gotten into EWR late........but that is with a lot of running and not checking in baggage, and knowing my way around the CO terminal very, very well.

To put it shortly, an hour is OK if everything goes exactly according to plan, if there is any problem, he will miss his connection. The good news is that CO has frequent flights between EWR and MCO and the system will simply rebook him on the next flight if he misses his connection.......all he needs to do is go to a service rep or put his card into a CO machine in the terminal and pick up a new boarding pass, its really that simple. Thus, I would keep the current schedule, hope for the best......and if things dont go right, its not such a big deal and be prepared to fly on the following flight.....if your friend has people meeting him at MCO (or time specific hotel/car rez), he should let the concerned parties know that there is a good chance he will arrive in MCO on the later flight.

One hour could be tight, but I believe that CO Terminal C is one of the easiest terminal to get around if you take into account the size and the huge markets being served. I connect in EWR about 3 times every quarter and I find it easy as pie.
