CO Starting IND-EVV

Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:22 am

Just saw a Star News report that the CO route IND-EVV was delayed until probably May. I didn't even realize this was starting. I guess CO won the bid on the route. I believe there was a grant involved to get a carrier to pick up this route. I assume this is the same grant that ATA took. ATA defaulted on the route. The original grant if I remember correctly was to fly EVV-IND and IND-SBN. Does anyone at CO have any information on this?

This is a link to the story talking about the delay in the route.

This has got to be a codeshare, maybe with Regions, which is cooking up some CO flying via CLE. Or maybe they would extend a couple of EWR-IND Embraers to EVV, although CO usually avoids tags.

It probably is RegionsAir. I found this story while doing more digging.

http://www.indianaeconomicdigest.com...1&SubSectionID=111&ArticleID=25127

"In recent weeks, RegionsAir has signed a contract with Continental to act as an express carrier from cities in West Virginia to Cleveland. This means Continental will provide the reservation system for these RegionsAir flights.

This might allow the Indiana airports to contract with Continental to provide the reservation system for the intrastate airline. Bailes said he has talked with Continental officials in recent weeks to see if they would operate the reservation system for the intrastate airline. Not only could Continental offer a less expensive reservation system, Continental's involvement could give passengers on the intrastate airline better connections to Continental's flights between Indianapolis and Cleveland, Newark and Houston, Bailes said. Why not run them all the way up to CLE? It's not like IND has good connection opportunities on CO, it's just going to be IAH, CLE, and EWR. Interesting, to say the least.

This is almost as dumb as Mesa wanting to do MCW-FOD-OMA rather than Mesaba to MSP.

There is a grant involved with this I believe. Thats why they are looking to do it. After they get to IND they can either stay in Indianapolis or catch a CO flight to Houston, Cleveland or to Newark. Not sure if they would code share this route with NW which would add 19 additional connection possibilities. When TZ took the grant it was to fly EVV and SBN to IND. The grant at that time was for $1 mil.

That is good. EVV needs more traffic there. Now they just need to find a way to lower fares into EVV so that when I go to visit my parents, I can fly into EVV versus the 6 hour drive.

There is no direct freeway link between Indianapolis and Evansville.
Surface travel between the two cities is not quick or easy.
This service is to serve the local O&D market.

How so? How much traffic can there possibly be between EVV and IND?

This reminds me of when the EAS flights from cities in WV went to CMH.

Checking the DOT report for June 30, 2005, EVV-IND is not listed, while EVV-CLE shows 11 pax a day. Neither route is going to survive on O&D and CO doesn't provide that many connecting markets in IND.

Still, Regions is a VERY low cost operator and a little subsidy goes a long way with them, especially if they use their Jetstreams

Enough traffic for some Indiana politicians to lobby for the funding....
180 miles, but a good 4 hours, if traffic is flowing.

Isn't that what the I-69 SW Extension in the IN-37 corridor is all about?

They were talking about that back in 1998 when I moved from Evansville up to the Chicago area. And I think in another 10 years they are still going to be talking about it.

O/T, but the distance from bigger hubs is one of the reasons why I've always thought Allegiant would be attracted to the Evansville market (including one would think Owensboro, KY also).

Gov. Mitch Daniels is saying that he wants to start construction by 2008 with the project to be completed in about 10 years. So there would need to be at least a short term solution to the problem. Once I-69 is finished to Indianapolis it will be just as easy to drive up to IND.

Then that will make it 20 years from the time I first heard about....having to drive from IND to EVV in 1988 and wondering why there wasn't a more direct route between two of Indiana's major cities.

The talk now must be serious enough that it caused a friend of mine to lose about $15k in 18 months on the value of a house from the time she bought it to when she sold it, in the Rt 37 area just on the outside of the 465 loop... nobody wanted to buy it becasue the DOT Was going to put a highway through the neighborhood.
