Underseat Baggage Space On The ERJ?

Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:18 pm

Hey everyone! I'm flying an ERJ on my upcoming trip, and I have 17A right now. I can still switch to the two seat side, but I would only do that if there is not that much space underneath the single seat side. I flew an ERJ two years ago, but I don't remember the amount of space. Is there enough space for a full backpack? Or just a very condensed backpack? Thanks!

No there is not room under any of the seats on an ERJ for a small backpack, much less a full backpack. Even the overhead bins will only handle small items. You will have to gate check the backpack at the gate, usually leaving it on the jetbridge before you board, and pick it up at the destination immediately after deplaning.
The RJs can only handle very small carryon items, like a laptop bag, purse, etc.

A small backpack will fit under the seat on either the single or double side on the ERJ. A rolling backpack, depending on how full it is will fit in the overhead bins. Which airline are you flying on????

Actually, I have had no trouble fitting a backback on the A side of ERJs. The underseat room isn't much, but it will handle a moderately-packed backpack (unless you're talking about a hiking backpack, but for some reason I don't think that's what you mean...).

I have had the same experience as Web - The last time i flew an American Eagle ERJ on the 'A' side there was definitely enough room for my small backpack.

Just a general question, but is the seat space exactly like the EMB-120? Because, I do remember that I had to shove and push to get my backpack under the seat.

I'm flying United Express/Trans States.

Haha, ya, your right, my backpack is just a regualr school backpack. I might take my messenger bag instead of my backpack, but I'll see how much I end up bringing with me.

Thanks for all the info guys!

It is a little bigger than the E120.

I flew on an UA Express/Trans States ERJ last month with a laptop bag and was originally assigned into 12A, an exit row. The 'A' seats lacked a lot of underseat space as they are slightly elevated compared to the aisle and the 'B' or 'C' seats. The overheads are pretty small as well so in the end I managed to put my laptop under the seat in front.

I found on the outbound flight when in 1A that the FA was willing to put my bags in the galley for the short flight, this saved time over getting it gate checked.

I must wholeheartedly disagree with the first reply.
17A is my favorite seat on the ERJ.
It should hold your backpack fine. It holds mine. Now, my backpack is about the largest object that will fit in the overheads. But I don't think you'll have to gate check it at all.

No material difference between the ERJ and the Brazilia.

As a rider of the ERJ-140 on an almost semi-monthly basis, its not worth it to bring your backpack on at all, just valet the thing at the gate and take out what you need with you on the plane.

I work on all 3 types, the 135/140/145 and a backpack fits perfectly fine. With 1A and 3BC on the 140/145 this is a blukhead and carryons will have to be placed in an Overhead bin. However the wonderful people that have a seat in front of them to place items under feel it is necessary to place the smallest freakin item in the overhead to take space away from my bulkhead pax. Even worse when you place a sweatshirt in the bin it ruins the flow.

Unless your bag is like massively big, you shouldn't have a problem at all. I find the under-seat storage space to be about the same on both sides of the UX E-145's.

Remember there's no overhead storage space above A seats, so if you're worried it might be to big you might want to get a seat on the B/C side so you can put your bag in the overhead bin as a last resort. I really don't think you'll have a problem, though.

I've been in 17A a couple times, though, and remember it being pretty loud back in the back. You may want to consider something up towards the front, but maybe it's just me.

depends on your backpack and what you have in it. A can be tight for larger/fuller backpacks.

B is great. holds everything. C is also great, since you can usually steal a little space from B if you get there first.

overhead is a joke for anything but briefcases, jackets and folding suit bags (folded multiple times).
