Frontier Upgrades TUS-DEN Equipment

Effective at the end of August, F9 will fly two Airbus flights per day between Tucson and Denver instead of two RJ's.

This is very good news as I fly this route on Frontier about 8 times per year. Too bad it isn't happening sooner!

The Horizon CR7's aren' too bad. I flew them up to BOI a couple of times. Pretty comfortable.

When I was at F9 the loads to OKC were good. Hopefully you'll see at least a 318 upgrade one day.

I could be wrong, but my memory is that OKC started as mainline, but the loads didn't support it.

Obviously, things have changed - DEN/OKC went up to 3 x daily.

So it is becoming a classic pattern. DAY, GEG and now TUS all go mainlne this summer.

Where are the CR7's going - Canada?

Always good to see markets get upgraded to mainline. Although the CR7's are nice, it still doesn't offer the full F9 experience to passengers.

I am happy to see this upgrade for Tucson. I would fly them if they had better connections, frequency. United has 2 mainline(?) to Denver and a couple of CRJ flights.

This is interesting. UA cuts mainline TUS-DEN and TUS-ORD when the school season down there is out. I guess they're betting on traffic to the University of Arizona and the winter tourist season.

F9 upgrading to mainline during the summer months shows that demand is still strong year round.

Hopefully this year UA continues mainline service through the summer months.

Traffic is strong during the summer but once kids are back in school traffic plummets (at the end of August) until it picks up again in October. So, they are going to be flying empty planes for about a month and a half. IMHO, it would make more sense to upgrade immediately after Memorial Day.

There is probably a bigger picture.

Frontier is a very small airline, the 50th (mainline) aircraft is arriving now. So there is a question of aircraft availability.

Which raises the next question - where will they deploy the aircraft that would otherwise have served TUS?

Early September is a curious time to add frequency on another CR7 route, or open a new station.

Although - that worked spectacularly well with DAY last year.

Being small, Frontier is able to swap flights around pretty easily....take a look at a sample of the changes for flights from SJC - note in the summer schedule the lack of CR7s...

Good memory.

But, before F9 was on it, I believe WestPac hopped on this segment between DEN and OKC first. More specifically, they used their feeder MAX (Mountain Air Express) who had a fleet of Dornier 328s and used the east-end of concourse A. Those 328s were brand new and exotic compared to the Dash-8s flying around for UA Express.
