What's With The UA 747 That Clipped QF 767?

Tue Feb 28, 2006 7:40 am

I was just looking formore info on what happened to the UA 747 that clipped QF's 767. Last thing I heard was that UA was chucking out 10K/day for storage only and there were some pictures here showing the 'wing spur' (or whatever they call it) on the 744. Is the 747 still stuck down under? What is UA using to replace the 747 since I heard they don't have a stand-by 747? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

Michael

Last I heard it was still down under and being fixed up, mind you that was over a week ago. I'm sure someone closer to the action might have more detailed, up-to-date info.

It's at UA"s San Francisco Maint Base. Ferried there 2/24 Flt 9923.
Not as easy as originally perceived

According to some pics that were posted here before, there was substantial damage to the wing tip. Did they ferry it back to SFO with all that damage? Hmmmmm...

The winglet was removed before the ferry flight. I'd imaging not much else was done to the wing structure, except maybe bashing some really dinged up parts back in place-ish.

That's weird-- I figured I saw it at the hangar the other day because I saw an old battleship grey color scheme with a new white and blue winglet. Hmmm... i should have grabbed the nose number on that one to do more research! dangit!

Oh well, so much for all the haters that were saying they'd have to replace the whole wing in one of the other 11-ty-9 threads about this same subject.
