September Hijacking Of 4 Airliners 1970

Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:00 am

On PBS (9pm Eastern) the American Experience is airing a film about the September 6, 1970 Hijacking of 4 Airliners.

Pan Am Flight 93, a 747, from Amsterdam to New York. Blown up in CAI.

Swissair Flight 100 from Zurich to New York, I believe it was a DC-8
TWA Flight 74 from Frankfurt to New York. 707
BOAC VC-10.

An LY aircraft was also involved in an attempted hijack.

The latter three were flown to Jordan and blown up.

I'd be interested to know what you all think of the program.

Wrong. Both towers weren't finished until 1973.

Quoting Steeler83 (Reply 1):
Four large planes hijacked - IN SEPTEMBER - the first 3 blown up with the fourth attempt failing

Yes, the fourth hijacking failed, but the article seemed to imply everybody got off the plane before it exploded.

This is also a world of a different kind of hijacking, in which the terrorists gave demands with some sort of chance of the passengers being released.

Wow, 36 years ago already. I remember when that happened, and there was only the network news and Time/Newsweek to see photos of what went on.

Thanks for the heads up ... not on for another few hours here on the coast.

Wasn't Yasser Arrafat behind that?

The 1970 hijacks do not compare with 9/11. The aircraft were hijacked to the Jordanian desert and blown up after demands were made and not met. My best recollection is that the crews and passengers were unharmed and there was certainly not the terrible colateral damage and casualties of 9/11.

Please note that the above does not mean that I in anyway condone the 1970 hijackings. I am simply saying they were very different to those of 31 years later.

Then the Time Magazine article I pulled that from is inaccurate... It said that the north tower was completed in 1970 and the other in 1972... I did not say that these hijackings were EXACTLY the same as the ones on 9-11. I saw the beginning of the program. I know that these planes were flown to the middle east and blown up rather than turned into airborn missiles... I meant that there were a few similarities and I simply pointed them out. I suppose I should have been more specific when I mentioned them...

You are correct. It was a DC 8.

Yes, it was the disgusting PLO leader that decided to destroy 4 wonderful aircraft!

WHAT SUBHUMAN GARBAGE

Don't want to get into a whole political debate, but "subhuman" is how the Israelis treat the Palestinians.

Just watched it and it was very interesting. Although a lot of the clips were not authentic, there were some great scenes of old airliners, not to mention the horrible sight of the beautiful SVC-10, DC-8 and 707 being blown up, but that is probably alright with Fly2CHC.

One should note that an interesting setting appeared to be inside a CV-990 in Mojave. I think it maybe the NASA bird!

There is a comparison in that there were 4 planes in incident, but that is as far as it goes.

Do you remember the Israeli raid on Beirut in (1968?). Again beautiful planes blown up but no bodies.

It would be far better if the Israeli's and Palestinians could stick to talking about sharing that plot of land. Then we could have films without planes being blown up.

No it was Steeler83.

He also refers to them as palistinian. As for getting p***** off after the 1967 war, well it was'nt just a game of football. After a war at least one side IS normally P***** off.
