Ilyushin And Tupolev Comfort

Tue Feb 28, 2006 12:40 pm

There is usually much discussion over Airbus and Boeing's passenger comfort and ergonomics (let alone interior material), but I have never seen a discussion come up about Ilyushin and Tupolev's interior design. I have looked at pictures of their insides, and I found most to look rather dated, and most do not feature moniters or PTVs except a few odd Vladyvostok, Vyborg, or Cubanas. I do not intend to single out specific countries of having clunky bag bins e.t.c., and I certainly can believe that Tupolevs and Ilyushins are quality aircrafts even if their not widely regarded as having the best interiors.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of flying on a couple of Aeroflot TU-154M flights and I would agree that the general interior features are not up to the same standards as might be expected on a similarly sized Airbus or Boeing aircraft. The seats are, to say the least interesting for those of us used to American carriers. The worst thing for me was knocking my head on the entry door - it seems that the height is a bit less than I was accustomed to.

Having said that, there is NOTHING like a takeoff in a TU-154. The sound of the engines is intense and, on the flights I have travelled, incredibly rewarding. The speed and angle of the takeoff were absolutely WILD out of SVO.

Overall, the experience was different and INCREDIBLY fun. The flights are relatively quiet, smooth, and comfortable within the confines of the seating. I would LOVE to get on one again!

Wait till you get a chance to fly a Tu-134  Wink
It's just a brick with wings but flies very smooth. You have to hurry though. SU is already getting them out and FV have started flying 735's so unless you want to fly Moscow-Samara or so chances are running out...
who decided that a Horizon should be HORIZONtal???

I never had a chance to fly on a Tupolev at all, but two years ago when I went to BUD I walked into those, a 134 and a 154, on the ground at the Air Park.in Ferihegy. I was very fortunate to have a look inside them. Yes, SU is getting rid of the 134's but they'll keep the 154's a little longer since they will likely be equiped with winglets as discussed in another topic.
I have never flown on an Ilyushin, on which I would love to take a flight, and I have not even seen those in real. I'll never get to fly on one unless I go to Russia.

Agreed the fastet and longest rotation I have ever experienced.
It is now a couple of years ago but I still remember the flight as one of my best.
A flight need not to be fun because you have PTVs, fancy meals and wide seats.
It can also be great experience in a 70s styled cabin which smells odd, I was excited of travelling the first time with a soviet build airliner and the second fastest commercial airliner in use. The roaring of the engines, take-off role and the flight itself were a great experience I will never forget
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong
