United's Inter-europe Operations?

Wed Mar 01, 2006 2:34 am

A couple of days ago I came across a picture of a UA B722 in FRA. Now I was wondering if United had like PA short-haul inter-europe operations? And when did they stop operating?

Hi UA933,

I recall that in 1992, United briefly used a handful of B727-222 for selected feeder flights from places like GVA, ZRH to CDG; As far as I remember all of the birds were old, non-advanced ones in the N764.U registration range (N7644U through N7647U perhaps?).

More info welcome, I have to rely on my memory here... Lukas

They had a 727 running between CDG and ATH before dropping ATH.. That was mid 90's.. I remember seeing them elsewhere but I can't remember where.

United flew the 727 out of LHR to many European cities in the early 90's, however it was a money loser and in the end those routes(slots) were effectively handed over to LH so they could feed the flights more profitably. I know alot of the UA Flight Attendants in LHR really miss doing those trips.

IIRC, in later years UA also operated triangle runs such as IAD-BRU-LHR (?) - IAD

Thanks for the info guys but it would have been cool if they where still around here in europe with short-haul flights!
On the business side however it was a wise decision!

Actually, UA operated 763s for a while back in the mid and late 1990s on the LHR-AMS and LHR-BRU runs. In addition, they also had nonstop flights from IAD to AMS (with 777s for a while) and to BRU (always with 763s I think). These extensions from LHR were not really to provide connections as very few people flew on them. From what I heard, it was cheaper to operate them on the short flights to/from LHR and parking at the other cities instead of parking them all day in LHR.

Wasn't this eventually operated by Transavia? Or was that CO?

And in 1991. The 722s used included N7638U, N7642U, N7646U and N7647U all seen at LHR in 1991-92. I also saw '38U at BRU but believe most of the flights from LHR were to German cities to which UA still has (unused) 5th freedom rights.

UA had a B727 service MUC-LHR, which was marketed as a direct flight to SFO .
That was back in the early 90ies.

Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin as well. When LH and UA began their alliance in 1994 these routes were handed over to LH, to free up UA's LHR slots.
