IIRC, in later years UA also operated triangle runs such as IAD-BRU-LHR (?) - IAD

Actually, UA operated 763s for a while back in the mid and late 1990s on the LHR-AMS and LHR-BRU runs. In addition, they also had nonstop flights from IAD to AMS (with 777s for a while) and to BRU (always with 763s I think). These extensions from LHR were not really to provide connections as very few people flew on them. From what I heard, it was cheaper to operate them on the short flights to/from LHR and parking at the other cities instead of parking them all day in LHR.

I recall that in 1992, United briefly used a handful of B727-222 for selected feeder flights from places like GVA, ZRH to CDG; As far as I remember all of the birds were old, non-advanced ones in the N764.U registration range (N7644U through N7647U perhaps?).
