What Can I Expect On DL 38 ATL-AMS?

Wed Mar 01, 2006 3:34 am

Flying DL 38 ATL - AMS tomorrow. Never flown in the Y cabin across the pond. What can I expect besides an aching back when I get off the plane? Food, service etc... thanks!

A pretty decent red light district, the Heineken factory tour, LOL, asides from that I've done the same flight from JFK to AMS and its a relatively quick flight. bring a book or a portable DVD player and for your aching back some motrin.

Row 30 still has the three across seating avail. Reserve yourself a seat there and maybe get lucky with two empty seats along side of you

Chicken or pasta.  silly

I've only flown DL domestic. Like many (all?) carriers in the US, domestic in-flight service is limited/non-existent. The FA's were OK. On the 4-5 hrs flights they offered drinks twice. The rest of the flight FAs walked through the aisles to collect -as they call it- "service items", AKA trash. I wonder why, 'cause the don't give you anything besides the 2 drink services.
I flew the DL 767 multiple times. The aircraft was not in the best condition, from a passenger point of view. Seats were not the best, dirty, thorn carpet, cracks in the walls, clearly heavenly used aircraft. The international used B767 should be different though.

Anyway, enjoy your flight and AMS (chilly!  cold  ) and no mather what people say about an airline it's always your personal experience that counts!

I flew it a couple of times last year. Nothing spectacular, by any means. I was surprised, though, when they served a light b'fast just before landing.

Empty seats? Whenever I was on the flight it was packed to capacity.

I would grab a couple of bottles of Coke from one of the kiosks in the Concourse before getting on the plane. That way if you get thirsty during drink services you don't have to venture too far. You might have to make a stop at one of the other concourses though since I don't remember E having anything other than bottled water in the stores.

As with any carrier I would never expect much in Steerage. You'll get a meal some time after takeoff, a couple of drink services, a movie or two on the big screen, and a light meal before landing plus another drink service. Hopefully that center seat will remain empty but who knows. Have fun and enjoy Delta. They may not be the greatest but they do a decent job.

When you get off the plane, you can expect to go through customs unless you go pee-pee first...

If you live in the Atlanta area, go into Fresh Market, Whole Foods, or Harry's and get yourself a decent (picnic) dinner. Meal service is pathetic, and drinks are $5 a piece. The plane will be battered, the old CRT video system might have a few colors that are aligned. Service is decent and friendly. I flew them AMS-JFK last week up front, as I am burning off my SkyMiles as quickly as I can. It's kind of fitting that "The Spirit of Delta" aircraft is making its final flights and then being put out to pasture.

Amsterdam was cold, grey, so your flight should prepare you nicely. Make sure you get to the Rijksmuseum for the Rembrant-Carivaggio exhibit. Enjoy. You only have to endure the flight for 8 hours, and it's over!

According to the seat mapper that is the case, could change though, I guess. FYI, for your return flight to ATL, the layers of security at AMS are unbelievable. As I recall, I passed through three diffferent secueity check points all with metal detectors and security personnel asking all sorts of questions about all sorts of things, you can imagine. The food service is adequate, they charge for the alcohol and the movies are decent. Expect great service and good old delta hospitality
