Announcement On New Airline To Serve RFD- Rockford

Wed Mar 01, 2006 8:48 am

Hi All,

About the new Airline to soon serve Rockford, just read an email I recieved from RFD Airport and well, you will get the picture. Any ideas on the Airline?

"Dear MilesAhead Members:

New Air Service Announcement – Please Join Us!

In two days on Thursday, March 2, a new airline will announce new air service from RFD. This service will differ dramatically from the service we have been able to develop over the past 2 1/2 years.

Several airline executives and distinguished guests will be at the Chicago/Rockford International Airport (RFD) to provide details on the destinations, pricing, and potential jobs associated with this Boeing 757 (200 seats) type service.

Please come out to the RFD Terminal at 9:45 am on Thursday to show this airline how interested - we - as a regional community are in this unique air service opportunity."

I have a real good idea. More service to LAS maybe daily... Service to PHX, and an east coast destination (charlotte, nyc)
Either US Airways / America West Airlines or maybe an international carrier? Also this was already discussed..

I'll take a shot and say Icelandair. I'll probably be wrong, but they are a 757 airline.

The problem with US Airways / America West would be that it is unlikely that they would choose an airplane as large as a 757 to fly to RFD when they could fly smaller A319s or A320s. But we'll see.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Not a bad guess, but what destination(s) would they serve. They specifically said destination(s) and I'd think if it were international they would hint at International service. But RFD has a huge Scandinavian population in a 4 hour drive so maybe service to Scandinavia?

They tried this before though with Sunship1, which was RyanIntl. Not a bad idea because there is always one or two Ryan 757's sitting there.

If US Airways is the one, any possible PIT or PHL service? I am sure PHL would be in the cards though...

Since my parents recently moved to the PHL area, I wouldn't mind seeing this. I'd drive to RFD vs ORD. I am flying US Airways to PHL in April for Easter and it is on a 737-300. If RFD had a 757 to PHL, it would not be a question where I would fly out of.

I don't think its anything domestic anymore. I have a feeling its international. Could be Iceland air to RFD and RFD on to SFO or LAS or LAX. Or maybe Finnair to RFD etc.

That would be nice to see PIT service to RFD.

I know I'd like to see this kind of service. RFD would be a nice alternative to ORD and MDW. I think US already serves PIT. How far away from Chicago is RFD. I am sure it can't be far. A half hour or so, maybe...

ORD & RFD are approximately a 1 hour drive from each other. This does not take into account traffic that can be expected during rush hour. During rush hour it can take double that time.

Chicago traffic is so weird, it is hard to judge times. I live 30 miles from where I work (live in NW suburbs near the I90/Randall Rd area and work out near PWK). It takes me over an hour to drive those 30 miles in the morning and at 5pm, it is an hour and a half to get home (I have to take 90, 53 to Lake Cook Rd....ugh!) That is why if I had the choice between RFD and ORD to PHL, RFD would be my first choice, especially with all of the construction going on at the Randall Rd toll plaza.

I heard a stupid rumor that Icelandair was looking into RFD as its Chicago-area airport, but like i said, stupid rumor. Although 757 does match up

Well I took all this iceland air garbage up for consideration. Go look at there website they have dropped service from MCO for SFB instead. (cost cutting) So if they wanted to serve Chicago RFD would fit their model.

On the other hand- take a long at all there supension of service annoucments to the USA SFO, MSP. Any airline that suppenses service needs to be looked at.

I agree with you B757Capt.. Just like Hooters Air tho. They totally cancelled all flights out of RFD but suspended service everywhere else... only to be returning....when? I couldn't help myself just because they suspended service. Icelandair is definitely a possibility, but on their site I believe I read that their 757 seat 226 or somewhere above 200. On RFD's announcement, they had 200 seats just like the 200 on Hooters' and Ryan's I believe, could be wrong. So either the person who typed up the press release at RFD didn't research enough (most likely the case) or we're totally off with the airline. Finnair is also a possibility I think because of the Scandanavian population around RFD. I definitely feel though that if there is international service that it will have another flight out of RFD out west somewhere.

Could have just been estimating/rounding

Quoting Nopeotone (Reply 9):

Correct me if I'm wrong, but then IcelandAir wouldn't be able to sell seats on only the domestic segment, right? The people going West from RFD would have had to have come from KEF (or elsewhere outside the US)?

As much as I'd like to see IcelandAir closer to IND than NYC or Washington, I just don't think it's them. But if it is, I'll certainly be willing to drive IND-RFD in order to fly RFD-KEF n/s...

It looks like they will be flying 757s, are backed by a Chicago VC company, and have some Fedex management. Those details came from here: http://emergingairlines.blogspot.com/

And also they serve BWI for Washington.

I know its not going to be announced now but RFD could be a good Chicago area airport for Icelandair, especially if Chicago area traffic would be relatively low yielding.

It looks like they made it official today with their press conference.

Some details can be found in this story:
http://www.rrstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...AID=/20060302/BUSINESS04/103020046

or they seem to be updating frequently here: http://emergingairlines.blogspot.com/

It looks like they are going to get started using anohter carrier's certificate while they get their own.

Smells like "Lehigh Valley Air" which lasted about a month before Hooters started working on absorbing it. Although I doubt Hooters will ever "absorb" something in Rockford ever again.

According to the Festival Airlines website http://www.festivalairlines.com
Pensacola, FL (PNS), will be the site for both light maintenance for the planned fleet of B757 aircraft, and dedicated training facilities for Festival Airlines personnel. Airport Director Frank Miller says the company will locate on the airport grounds.City Manager Tom Bonfield said previously the deal could bring more than 120 jobs to the area, with an average salary of more than 70-thousand dollars. Company officials have scheduled a press conference for Friday morning at the airport. Would be great to see a 752 at PNS! Doubt...RFD-PNS though (on scheduled service)

From the Pensacola News Journal:

http://www.pensacolanewsjournal.com/...ID=/20060303/NEWS01/603030329/1006

While it would be nice to see regular 757 service to PNS, this airline seems doomed from the start. I have my doubts this airline will ever get off the ground and if it does, it won't last long.

They seem clueless from the strategy perspective so far. The fares that thy are quoting (starting at $200?) are awfully high. There has been no mention of how much capital they have access to....if any at all.

Well,Festival Airlines held a press conference today at PNS. Basically they said what we allready know. (The Chicago-based airline will build headquarters for its training and light maintenance programs at PNS.)

-CEO and Chairman Carl George says Pensacola will be one of 35 U.S. cities it will service in the next 30 months.
-The airline hopes to take off by the end of the year, but does not yet have a date or destination for it's inaugural flight.

Wait And See I Suppose...

Looks like a d/b/a arrangement to start. So Festival owns/leases the 757 and somebody flys the aircraft off of their certificate.

Wasn't Hooters a vacation airline pretty much, considering that the places that were more than likely destinations rather than origins were places like Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Florida, and Nassau? (Probably another dumb question of mine...)
