They did, but it was via HKG IIRC, this would be SFO-CAN non-stop. I think this is great, as it will be only the second n/s flight from the US to CAN, the other being CZ's nonstop to LAX from CAN. As much as I would like to see a carrier like CZ here, this is great.
BTW, a little Off topic here, but does China Eastern have any plans to fly to SFO anytime soon? That would be awesome.

This is actually UA's third attempt to get the SFO-CAN nonstop as part of additional China frequencies that become available each year. Previous winner were Continental EWR-PEK and American for ORD-PVG.

I'm sure some of the previous applicants will dry again including Delta ATL-PEK, Hawaiian HNL-PVG and AA and CO for yet additional city pairs.

Thats sorta stupid, HKG-CAN is a very short flight. Although i still do remember the application being for a nonstop flight. Maybe im wrong.

It always strikes me that UA does tons of non-stop flights from the U.S. to Asia and does flights using their Japan 5th freedom rights. Yet NW doesn't do this at all. They did about 10 years ago but now its back to via NRT, KIX and NGO. NW dropped the ball. Way to go UA.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

I speculate that the following applications are also possible (listed in order of likelihood, IMO):

AA: ORD-PEK, JFK-PEK, JFK-PVG
DL: ATL-PEK, JFK-PEK
CO: EWR-PVG

I'd like to see UA get SFO-CAN and DL get ATL-PEK. Why? I think it is important for a new non-stop market to be opened by a US Carrier, so I support SFO-CAN. While we're starting to get plenty of non-stops to PEK and PVG, CAN is underserved by US Carriers. I also like the fact that UA actually flies from the West Coast, rather than through midwest or east coast hubs.

DL on the other hand would open up a new part of the country to China service, offering many many connections.

Finally, I think other airlines should get a chance and I don't think AA/CO should be awarded any rights this time unless they were to propose other cities like CAN that are not already well served.

It would be nice for the SFO-CAN UA application to go through, as well as the HA HNL-PVG one. I think those two will go through, but the ATL-PEK one could pass as well. Its really a crapshoot.

AS739X-Yeah, I heard there were some terrible loads on those flights. Almost like the Brazil flights up to SFO. Anyway, more Intl. flights to SFO are always a good thing. I hope some of these rumors like EK, EI, and AI to SFO come true...the more the merrier.

Where would UA get the additional JumboJet? Is it possible that the 2 JumboJets reported at www.boeing.com/commercial/orders/ could be for UA? (I realize, of course, that delivery of those 2 would be after UA have asked to start flying CAN.)

Zvezda...No, they have 744's in the desert. They will bring 2 of those out before ever buying 2 new planes.

Here's a quick article from this past week's Sunday San Francisco Chronicle on San Francisco - Guangzhou/Canton ties. Not aviation-related, but may interest some.

At the last round UA also applied for CAN. I have the documents somewhere on my harddisc where UA explains why they should get the traffic rights. Obviously CO and AA won that time.
In the original documents UA applied for SFO-NRT-CAN which they indicated to make nonstop after one or two years.
Maybe this time thez wnat to start with a nonstop right in the first place.

Quoting RwSEA (Reply 6):
AA: ORD-PEK, JFK-PEK, JFK-PVG

I would actually expect AA to apply for DFW-PEK.

While I agree with RwSEA that AA will probably apply for ORD-PEK, and not DFW-PEK, daily, I agree with you, BigGSFO, that it would be smarter on AA's part to apply for DFW-PEK. AA would do quite nicely to be able to claim in its DOT filing that it will not only be opening up a new Chinese city to AA flights, but it would also be opening up a new U.S. gateway for the service, especially because it is a gateway that provides more onward connections throughout the U.S. (in terms of flights per day) tha any other U.S. hub but ATL. In addition, AA will be able to offer far more connections, more conveniently, to the 2008 Olympics in PEK via DFW than via ORD.

They used to fly into SFO, a few years back with the MD-11, can't recall the flight numbers. They still sorta do but it is a cargo flight and I believe it is via ANC using a MD-11.

Well if that's the argument, then DL at ATL should get the rights instead. While both DFW and ATL offer minimal O&D to China, they both have plenty of connecting flights, in fact, ATL is the biggest airline hub on earth. Plus with DL, the DOT would be able to give rights to a new carrier (AA already has China rights).

It seems this 3rd time around, United stands a much better chance.

In the two previous awards the DOT stated it wanted to introduce new airlines into the China market besides the incumbent United and Northwest, while also providing New York at the time the largest non directly served US-China market with a US carrier.

This time the DOT could further US carrier reach into China by introducing a totaly new city with nonstop service by a US carrier outside of the current concentration of all nonstop flights to Beijing and Shanghai by the US carriers.
Guangzhou and the surrounding region have become very economically important and US business interest could be well served by UA proposed new city pair market.

Outside of the United bid, I would say Delta would likely stand the best chance as it could introduce a new city on the US end along with the Southeast market to China services eventough it yet again would be adding to the concentration of US services at PEK and PVG.
