What Year Did Viasa Quit IAH?

Sat Mar 04, 2006 1:55 am

I am dicsussing wuth someone on another forum regarding VIASA and their service to IAH. However I do not recall the year that they ceased operations to IAH, I am thinking 95-96 but I can not confirm that. IIRC, VIASA shut down in 97, correct...?

Thanks,

Thomas

That is correct. VIASA shut down in Feb of 97, and I can tell you that by then HOU was not part of their network based on the combined timetable of Grupo Iberia 1997, which I have a copy.

Viasa gave up the route in 1995 when it ended its lease of 2 Airbus A300B-4. Its fleet then consisted of 5 DC-10-30s (all delivered brand new to the airline in its time) and 5 Boeing 727-200 Advanced (ex-Iberia with over 23 years of hard work !).
Neither aircraft was then deemed suitable for the route by the airline Spanish administration of the day though Viasa, in its heyday in the late 1970s and early 80s, flew DC-10-30 equipment on the Caracas-Maracaibo-Houston and Caracas-Houston services.

Hope this info helps for your purposes.

Incidentally, Viasa shut down officially (last flight, that is) in early January 1997.

Thanks guys. I had a feeling that it was 95 or 96.

Too bad that IB really did a number on Viasa. I had the pleasure of flying from IAH to CCS via AUA in the early 90s and found the flight enjoyable. I am not certain how IAH was performing as a US gateway for Viasa but in memeroy seves the flight (DC-10) was fairly full, but then again as we all know a full flight does not alway equate a profitable flight. IIRC, I paid just under $250 for a R/T ticket.

Hopefully the US and Venezuela can come to some agrement on the CAT situation that threatens to cut direct service form both countries. I would hope to see a Venezuelan carrier return to Houston one day should a new agreement be signed and cooler heads prevail.

VIASA is always an interesting topic for me...

How many times was the route flown and who did it cater to mostly? I know it was a route that that had been flown since the 70s particularly to connect the big Petroleum companies between Houston, and Maracaibo and Caracas, but what boggles me is that the flight had very few frequencies per week...implying that it wasn't business clientele friendly.

Last flight was FRA-CCS on January 23, 1997 Sad

I was under the apparently mistaken impression that at least one DC10 (YV-134C) flew for KLM (PH-DTG) before going to VA?
