Qantas 744s Avod Question

Sun Mar 05, 2006 12:17 pm

Hi, just wondering if anyone knows how the AVOD updates are going on the QF 744 fleet. I know they already have this in all classes on their A330s and some 744s but are they complete yet? Am flying to LA/New York from Melbourne in May and just curious to know if the 744s will be AVOD equipped by then.

Thanks!

I'll be flying LAX-BNE in July. I'd like to hear if they will be on that route, as well.

By May, I believe there will be about 11 744s fitted with AVOD. It depends on your flight. If you are on 93 from MEL, which is more often than not a 744ER, only 2 hulls will be complete by the time you leave.
If you are on 25 via AKL, then about 3 hulls will be complete.
107 to New York, I would suggest you would be very lucky.

Cheers

hey QantasClub...

Noway near finished!

Let you in on a little hint.... its better to have NON AVOD at the moment due to the difficulties we are having with it! Patch 3 has gone in and it is looking a tad bit stable!!!

Just did a flight on -OJE and the system crashed 30 mins out of LAX... hard to say but the had no entertainment for the entire flight!!! It was hecktik for us crew!!!

Enjoy your flight with us...

PS: If you are on QF25/26 you will have a higher chance of getting the new AVOD system rather than flying direct! They will not be on those services unless an aircraft goes U/S.

Bummer, that is annoying. AVOD is so much better-especially during those toilet breaks! I don't know why they can't get a decent system. SQ has had AVOD for years and I have not had a single problem with them on the last 6 sectors flown last year.
Still, better than having no PTV at all i suppose.

I must have been lucky, was on OJS last year just after AVOD was installed, and had no problems at all.

OJS was the first aircraft out...reliability is somewhat 40/60...

I am flying to Hong Kong and Shanghai next week with QF. Up to Hong Kong on the 744 and back from Shanghai on the A330.

Will do a trip report and let you know how the AVOD goes.

Hope it is on the 744 to Honkers.

I cant believe after all this time thay are having trouble with the system. This technologfy has been available for years.

Air New Zealand. Can you expand on your experience with the system and what are they doing to fix it.

I heard that it often goes out in economy but business and first are ok? Is this right? Also how often is it going down and can you normally fix it in flight?

And how do the passengers rate it if it is working

Thanks and cheers

Yeah, but it depends on the manufacturer of the system to master it!

RCPS equips QFA, ANZ, AFR and DLH amongst others, and are putting a lot of efforts on overcoming this issue.

What I don't understand is that RCPS bought back Sony Transcom some years ago, and they (Sony) were the first to really master the AVOD, but I guess the knowledge got lost along the way.
No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

Hey there guys...to let you in on the experience...

The rego of the aircrafts fitted with AVOD are as of 23Feb06...
VH-OJS, -OED, -OJI, -OJE, -OJG, -OJU.

Only 6 aircrafts have the system.

-OJS, -OED have the Patch 4 system installed which enables ALL classes to use the full features of AVOD. this patch has subsequently rendered most problems with the system and as such is running at 97% reliability!!!!!

-OJE, -OJG, -OJS, -OJU stil have patch 1 installed subsequently Y/C cabin is locked out meaning you cannot access the AVOD system. You have to then go to channel 9(News channel) and use your remote control "CH" button to scroll thru the movies.
P/C, J/C cabins still have full AVOD working and usually works fine...

Enjoy your flights with us!!!!!!
In regards to your PVG flights... you will ave the A330-300..

All aircrafts are working with 99% reliability and VH-QPJ has patch 3 loaded which enables Jukebox functions, new flightpath map and SMS and Telephony services!!!!

In regards to other questions....

Passengers love the system, think it is fantastic.
It is hard to fix it onboard as their is only two things we can do, either a hard reset or a soft reset!!! Usualy for AVOD they go un noticed and your TV is screwed!
