Classiest Tails

Sun Jun 04, 2000 5:08 pm

What, in your opinion, is the classiest airline tail? I think that United's is... the purplish-bluish stripes mixed with the dark navy blackish-blue stripes are timeless, elegant, contemporary, and professional; coupled with the trademark and clean-cut "U", I think United has the best tails in the sky.

Kudos also to Virgin Atlantic, Continental, Philippine Airlines, Lufthansa, and British Airways.

BTW, I think that all of United's "U" symbols should be outlined by white as they are on the current striped tail as they look more defined and bold than without the white outline on colored backgrounds (such as on the new United Shuttle fueselage).

Air New Zealand's tail is definately one of the clasiest around.
Unfortunately most pictures of it show it to be plain navy blue, when in fact it is a deep green colour which gradually changes to navy about halfway up. If pictures show the change, it appears to be very abrupt. In real life it looks superb, appearing to be green or blue depending ont he light, and the angle you see it.

The Best Are....

Sun Jun 04, 2000 11:54 pm

First I would have to say Air Canada. Totally awsome.
Clean looks, represents the country well.

Second Aer Lingus, A little to much green on the overall plane, but the same as Air Canada, Represents the county well.

Third, British Airways. The older Colours were much better than the World Colours. To bad they never kept them. Mind you the New Tail of the Union Jack looks great!!

Fourth, Quantas. Just says it all.

I agree with Airman99o that the old BA tails were great. They oozed class, and I think the design was timeless, yet ahead of its time when introduced in '84/'85. (Does that make any sense...?)

The new BA tail design, post 'World Colours' looks great too, but my vote for best tail would have to go to Continental. It's such a simple idea, but looks fantastic. The 'blur' effect really works, don't you think?

I think the "classiest" tail would have to be that of Northwest Airlines. I'm actually surpirsed that this hasn't been mentioned yet. When you look at the tail, notice that the circle is actually a compass with the little tri-angle/arrow pointing to the northwest! The negative red space also allows you to see both an N and a W. This unique symbol nessled in the top corner of the all red tail makes it a very classy and modestly elegant looking tail. Whoever came up with this was a marketing genius! Truly, the most classy and the most cleaver as well!

Other classy tails are Air Canada and United. Air Canda is a very close second to Northwest. The colors are just wonderful to look at. I love that big maple leaf surrounded by the forest green; also very cleaverly done. It goes so well with the white fuselage and big red title. I agree with Imkeww about United: It is a very elegant looking tail.

To my mind, the classiest tails are Aeroflot (white and the russian flag), Air France (only the french flag...)

I am shocked no one has mentioned South African's new tail! Beautiful colors, unique & representative of the country. I also like Swissair --- simple, yet powerful --- and Icelandair --- nice touch & exotic. Domestically I'd have to go with Continental. Delta's new tail actually looks great in person, but may be a little too "out there" for a lot of tastes --- similar to BA's former "world" tails.

I like JAT's, of course. The new and the old. You have to look at the whole plane and not just the tail to get the full effect.

The old is very classy. I mean what is more classy than an airline displaying its abbreviation on the tail. The silver is also beautifull.

I think that the two best are the newest Delta one, and the old British Airways tail. Going to the designs BA has now was a mistake.
