When Did DL Switch Back To The More "angled" Logo?

Tue Mar 07, 2006 1:39 am

been noticing lately that DL is back with the older (but original) logo. Where their logo has the distinct point. When they went to "wavy gravy" they rounded it a bit. when did they switch back?

Switched back late 2004/early 2005 I believe after much employee criticism.

Thank god, I hated the frowning widget.

Yes. Personally, I think it looks better as well. While I may not agree with all that Gerry does, I'll agree on this front.

Now it will be interesting to see if there is a new livery post BK.

You can say that again! I called it the wimpy widget. You really have to be careful with logos and branding. That has to be one of the most recognizable in the world. Even the slightest change can change opinion in the minds of customers. To me, the "new" widget's roundedness portrayed weakness. Though I assume the roundedness was meant to match up to the "wavy gravy" livery. And along with that also came the "Delta" word mark in a rather ordinary font. Of course, the previous word mark had a plain font, but in all caps with the block, "DELTA," seemed much stronger. I do hope for a new livery, though I can live with the present. My "wavy gravy" would have had the flag start narrow at the cockpit and flow back across the window line and then unfurl at the tail. It's the bald whiteness of the livery that gets me sometimes. I would also vote to bring back the winged, art deco, "Delta" word mark and a "gold crown" service mark.

It also looks a whole lot better and professional on their aircraft. Bolder look to go with the softer and smooth tail. Judge yourself:

You! Out of the posting! The "Limp Widget" sucked ass. It wasn't a true "delta" which is the symbolism behind the logo and the roots of the airline.

I think the angular logo looks better, I just wish it was more prominent on their aircraft now.

Agreed. I would like to at least see it back at the forward boarding doors. That would be my alternate wavy gravy idea. Have the flag motif come off aft of an angled widget and on back to the tail.

I don't necessarily have a problem with the wavy gravy, but I do miss the widget. Glad it's at least back on the planes in its true form.

Well, sounds close, but the majority name of it was referred to as the "lazy widget." The new rounded logo was introduced in summer 2000 and wasn't a big hit with employee's. You were correct when you said branding is a very important thing. The original widget never went out of style. But our "not-so-bright" management at the time(Leo) hired a marketing firm who decided the original widget was too militaristic and wanted it changed.

Only after Jerry became CEO that, during the 2004 celebration of Delta's 75th anniversary, that he announced the "heritage widget" was returning. Delta employee's always preferred that particular widget and saw no need for it to be changed in the first place.

lol I actually had not noticed that they straightened it in the first place. Don't see much of DL these days except for the occasional visit to ATL.

I think the first plane in the Wavy livery to sport the restored widget appeared in June or July of '04.

Yes, I can hear it, "What do people want from the widget logo?" Seriously, I suppose if you took the logo out of context, you might get some respondents in a focus group to see that. I am surprised they just did not throw out the widget shape entirely. Were they the same group that came up with the "Song" scheme? Which wasn't bad actually. Some of the colors were a bit garish to me, but it did envoke the happy, groovy, mid-60's pop feeling.

Real Widget came back in October 2004...I remember travelling through ATL and CVG several times in November and first seeing it, but it wasn't around when I was regularly going through ATL in September...the fake one didn't cut it at all with me.

Yes same firm, it's called Landor.

You can go to their website (www.landor.com) and see their rationale for both Wavy Gravy/Droopy Widget as well as Song.

Amazing.

Perhaps instead of paying so much attention to a minor logo change that I can almost guarantee you the travelling public doesn't notice/care about, and focusing more on the underlying financial problems of Delta, the airline could have been in a better position today. So yes, immensely trivial.

At first, I didn't know what you were talking about with the "rounded" logo appearance. Then, I scrolled back to the top to look at the two different logos, and now I get the idea. And, that rounded thing... well I think one could tell what I think of it...

Ah, I had forgotten it was Landor and Associates. To me their designs range from either, "That's ok," to "You gotta be kidding me!" The only one in their portfolio that I really liked was the Candadian "Goose." Too bad it didn't last long in the skies. It was spectacular!

This minor change was more for an internal effect. The change back was ment to be a message to employees that the Leo era is behind us. It took very little effort to say "From here forward don't use that stupid new logo that nobody likes." The heritage logo is only being put up when there is a new sign or paint job. There isn't a wholesale campaign to rid the company of the frowning widget.

Changing a logo is always a risk in marketing, both externally and internally. Logos are not trivial. They are a very importaint marketing tool that identifies a company.

I always liked the older angled logo much better, there's something about it that gives it that more professional look.
