Air India IFE Revamp?

Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:03 am

I read a while ago about Air India revamping its international IFE in all classes. What sort of system will it be? What aircraft will have the revamp? And how many have been completed?

Thales is the IFE vendor for their 744 fleet.

It's about time... Thales makes the systems for Alitalia, Virgin Atlantic Nova, and I believe Aer Lingus and British airways (but do correct me if I'm wrong). I find It tends towards distributed channels rather than computer networks, but I hear they're planning something special for the 787.

You seem to be knowledgeable about IFE systems...can you enlighten us about some things....

1. What are the different type of systems seen on different airlines / aircrafts?

2. Where is the software housed...ie. which part of the aircraft is it located?

3. How do the F/A's control the IFE?

Always wanted to know this....can you help....  smile

Hopefully they'll be PTVs on all 747s.

From what I understand they will be upgrading their six owned 747-400s and will be having it installed in all new aircraft coming in. Some of the leased aircraft already have systems in place so perhaps they'll just change the programming.

So once again, Air India passengers will be told the following by a paunchy uncle:

"No PTV on this aircraft, Saaar. This is VT-SHT. VT-SHT, VT-CRP, and VT-JNK only have old style movies. But why you are complaining, huh? Movie is free, no? OK, OK, monitor is not working? Let me hit it a few times and it should be ok. In the meantime, don't use lavatories at the back. They are not working."

Yah that will happen but it's a shame that the reason those items don't work is because of moronic passengers. They treat the aircraft like an ST bus but wouldn't be caught dead on one back home.

And soon LAN 763.

On modern widebody aircraft, the software and head end hardware is usually installed in a closet is often refered to as a VCC (video control center) or a PWS (purser work station) or a PCC (purser control center). On 747, I have designed installations placing them in a variety of locations, usually aft of door 1 but forward of the wing. Some are installed in a sidewall location similar to a lav and a few are installed under the stairway to the upperdeck.

On 767, I've put them just aft of the flight deck in the center and I have seen them forward of door 1 on the left. Some 777 also have them just aft of the flight deck in the center, but I don't know if that is true for all 777.

On some narrowbody aircraft and some older 767, the equipment and software is installed in a stowbin.

Not as of September 5, 2005, the last date I took an Air India flight.

Oh dear. Now I understand. Poor Jay had to slum it. Who knows, you may look fondly on the experience later on in life. Experience of flying..AI style.
I still fondly remember my bad old days of flying AI.

I think this boring job is finally getting to me. I am fondly remembering AI flying experiences.......

On many Airbus A330s with the Rockwell Collins system (Air France and Swiss) there is a big rack of harddrives in the back behind some curtains, and it's neat to stand there and feel the heat coming off them  Smile. Most of the time, it's in a central location like that, but some of the more oddball systems (like Virgin's V:PORT) have hard drives under certain seats. With modern, more premium systems like the ones on Singapore air and Emirates, there is a beautiful touch screen board which controls all the computers and junk in a colorful graphical interface. Less lucky are the Virgin FAs, who get a linux computer. Some older distribution systems (cheap, reliable, works for some), look like a home sterio!

I hope that helps  Smile

And it's even neater to try to find a place in the plane to dispose of 200-700 cfm of hot air from those devices. Nice systems (usually OEM) dump it overboard via the lav/galley ventilation system. Cheaper systems end up pumping it overhead or below the floor.

Wasnt that a contributing cause of SR111?

That's why all cooling fans must be linked to smoke detection in the IFE equipment enclosure or exhaust ducting. Smoke event detection must shut off all IFE power including cooling fans.
