DL SLC To ASE, BLI, DSM, FAR, FSD, YYJ, And YYZ

Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:16 am

Big announcement out of Salt Lake City today. Here's the Delta press release:

Delta Air Lines to Serve 100+ Destinations from Salt Lake City with Seven More Non-Stop Destinations from Utah
New service to Aspen, Bellingham, Des Moines, Fargo, Sioux Falls, Toronto, Victoria highlights Delta's next wave of growth; special low fares celebrate new routes

SALT LAKE CITY, March 6, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Delta Air Lines this summer will offer customers even more choices for travel to and from the airline's growing Salt Lake City hub with the addition of seven new non-stop destinations effective June 8. The new destinations -- which will be the only non-stop service offered between Salt Lake City and any of these cities -- are: Aspen/Snowmass, Colo.; Bellingham, Wash.; Des Moines, Iowa; Fargo, N.D.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Service to Aspen/Snowmass and Victoria will be operated seasonally between June 8 and September 2, 2006.

Today, Delta begins its inaugural service to Long Beach, California -- its 99th destination out of Salt Lake and later this week, will initiate service to its 100th destination from Salt Lake City when inaugural service begins to Mazatlan Mexico on Wednesday, March 8. Salt Lake City is Delta's third-largest hub and with Delta's increased presence has become the second-largest hub in the entire Western region.

``Delta is thrilled to be a part of this momentous occasion. Serving our 100th destination out of Salt Lake is certainly something to celebrate, but we're not stopping there,'' said Bob Cortelyou, Delta's vice president of Network Planning. ``We are proud to continue to expand our presence in Salt Lake City with the addition of seven more non-stop routes for our Salt Lake City customers. Since the beginning of 2005, Salt Lake City has become Delta's fastest growing domestic hub in terms of destinations served as customers have responded favorably to a growing line-up of popular new flights from our convenient Mountain West hub to destinations throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.''

Since October, Delta has added or announced new service between Salt Lake City and 21 non-stop destinations, including flights launched last year to leisure and business hot spots such as Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Kona, Hawaii; Hartford, Conn., New York-LaGuardia; Miami, Fla.; and Columbus, Ohio.

To celebrate its newest routes, for a limited time Delta is offering special introductory airfares for travel via Salt Lake City to or from any of the hub's seven new destinations. Tickets must be purchased by March 21, 2006.

I think it must have a lot of YYZ traffic to and from all sorts of western destinations in mind--ie connecting traffic to and from DLs extensive western network out of SLC. Doesn't that also make sense based on the timing of the flights?

Since DL seems to be interested in expanding its SLC operations and AM dropped SLC a few months ago, do you think it is reasonably to expect the announcement of a DL SLC-MEX route soon?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Of these. ASE BLI FAR YYJ have no Delta service as of right now. So these are new cities for Delta. Not bad.

SkyWest starts CRJ700 service to ASE for United Airlines on April 17th. SkyWest is really going to capitalize on getting the CRJ700 into ASE.

Some of the routes out of SLC in the past were started as a result of "travel banks", that is guaranteed funds to support the route for a given period of time that usually come from local chamber of commerces or local economic developemnt agencies. I know the SkyWest/DL routes to Eugene and Redmond OR are being funded by this type of arrangement.

I have no knowledge of this, but I would not be surprised to learn that there are "travel banks" funding routes such as Victoria, BC and Fargo, ND.
Perhaps someone could answer this for sure.

The problem with routes like these is that the day the funds agreement expires, the route gets discontinued, unless it truly succeeds on its own merits.

It is new, just started this month. Right now 2 CR7's are flying and 3 more are coming. They currently fly SLC-BZN, GEG, RNO, ONT, and TUS. There is also one flight to JAC on Saturdays.

edited to add JAC.

The SLC-ASE route is major news, and will undoubtedly make the front page of both local papers this week. I kind of had a feeling that this was going to happen after UA got permission to use the CRJ-700 on the DEN-ASE routing. Increased air service into Aspen is always a good thing!

What I want to know is why DL is making their ASE service summer only? You would think that if they wanted a seasonal Aspen service, they would go during the ski season.

You'd be surprised, there are very strong loads on all carriers that already serve here (United Express/Northwest/Allegiant), all three of them having a very beneficial establishment here. I am sure Delta will be very pleased with the results out of Fargo.

Quoting RobertS975 (Reply 12):

For Fargo, I can't say if this is for sure, but it is very possible. I know some of the state government figures played a large role in pressing for an additional airline service, so it's quite possible. (I remember reading something about it in Fargo's airport admin. meeting minutes.) Even more, the airport also hired a specific agency to work with potential airlines and convince them to consider serving Fargo. We originally had America West (believe it or not) potentially coming, but that was a no go.

I can speak on behalf of Fargo because of my location just being an hour drive away, and thus I stay pretty current with the airport's occurences and meeting minutes. Being I am a new a.netter, I'll be sure to throw a trip report up very soon out of FAR and give you a visual of what's it's like up here!

Very nice to see some more mainline service to YYZ from DL.
The arrival time into Toronto also seems okay for connections to Skyteam member flights operated by AF, AZ, KL and OK.

I don't see where it says ASE is seasonal. That being said, when we found out about this at ZW, some people in the office are still doubtful this will ever happen with United. That being said, once it was revealed that ASE would by on a skywest CR7, it was fairly obvious that DL would be in in a heartbeat.

The question now becomes, when the NW RFP is answered, will the new airlink carrier maintain the ASE service that was provided on the AVRO, would the new pilot agreement allow CR7's, or will NW just pull out of ASE entirely? And might US replace the PHX-ASE Dash-8 with a PSA CR7 instead?

I would think that they did get funds for starting the route. HP was offered money for starting up FAR-PHX but that didnt go through. The money was actually from a federal grant to increase air service, not sure if there was money from state/local agencies as well.

Aviacentre- I am a UND student, so also an hours drive from Fargo. Keep myself updated. The HP plan was axed when the announcement of the USAirways merger came to be reality. Streamlining the network was a top priority instead of adding PHX-FAR. Along with this FSD will loose America West service shortly.

Okay, my new bet is when SLC will overtake CVG for the #2 DL hub (in terms of mainline quantity of flight operations), or has this happened yet?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people looking to fly between SLC and YYZ, but we have had to make do with either UA or AA, or in some cases like me, CO. It will be anice additions to cities served out of SLC.

Yes, with Skywest, as well as back from 1987-1992, one of the original Western Airlines routes, flown with a combinaton of 737-200 and 737-300 a/c at them time.

It may be getting close in mainline flights, but adding in connection, CVG will be #2 for a while. Those barbie jets fly everywhere out of CVG. In total, I think DL serves something like 120 destinations out of CVG. If my memory serves me right, there are something like 400 and something DL flights each day, of which just under 100 are mainline and the rest on RJs.

Okay, my new bet is when SLC will overtake CVG for the #2 DL hub (in terms of mainline quantity of flight operations), or has this happened yet?

Not yet, DL has added flights to CVG, but I would not be surprised to see SLC as the #2 DL hub.

When was the CRJ series approved to go into Aspen?

Also, Fargo is a little bit of a surprise, im guessing that NW will handle the operations there since there are no open gates.

Who knows? FAR is an all-Skywest UA station, and SkyWest runs shop there so maybe Skywest will do their own flight there, and use the UA gates, they have 2 gates for 6 flights a day.

With service to Fargo, North Dakota, I believe that DL and DL Connection now serve 49 of the 50 states... just Delaware is missing.

Farg was originally served by Western Airlines way back when DL bought them

Western never served Fargo. [Farg]

Are you thinking of Bismarck ND? It was the only city in North Dakota that Western ever served.

They did however serve many cities in SOUTH Dakota.

Original Western cities in the region are:

Sioux Falls SD
Huron SD
Pierre SD
Rapid City SD
Minneapolis MN
Casper WY

With all of these strange and unexpected routes I am more and more willing to bet that we see SLC-CDG within the next year or so. Wow, DL's really in expansion phase at SLC. This should've happened a long time ago but great to see. Go Delta!

I think many on this board might underestimate how profitable some of these smaller markets are. Especially those with limited competition - for instance, BLI only has flights to SEA. For people going to California or Alaska, this is great, but for people wanting to go East, SLC will be a much more convenient option and allow some folks to avoid double-connecting.

DL will likely be able to charge a premium on some of these routes because they'll be one of only a couple carriers. For example, QX regularly charges $400 round-trip on its SEA-PUW flights, and it costs me 2-3x as much to fly SEA-Minot than SEA-JFK.

In the case of BLI, the cheap-seat crowd will probably still drive to SEA or YVR, but for business people wanting (and willing to pay for) convenience, these flights will do well.

The only current service at BLI is Allegiant.

Don't forget Horizon.

Yikes where was my brain. And of course San Juan Air also. So DL will technically be the 4th carrier at BLI with BLI now having flights to SEA, SLC, LAS and the islands.

Is SLC-LGW possible? Paris could work but so too could LGW. You can bet DL's friends in Utah would move mountains to get a transoceanic flight for Utah.

SkyWest starts CRJ700 service to ASE for United Airlines on April 17th. SkyWest is really going to capitalize on getting the CRJ700 into ASE.

According to the ASE Skywest employees the FAA has not yet approved of the CRJ700 flying into ASE. I think DL just jumped on the band wagon! We shall see  Smile

last I heard, the FAA inspector has not yet signed off SKYWEST service into ASE. The word on the street is that the CRJ700 can NOT handle a balked landing. (that means below a go around with in 50' of the ground) At ASE if you have to balk the procedure is a climb at 130kts and a 30 degree bank. IF not you crash into a mountain. it is still up for debate if the CRJ can do it. When ZW was looking for a replacement for the 146 everything was looked at and the only replacement was the AVRO. The CRJ705 could not even do it. The crj's if they are certified will be heavily weight restricted 40 or less people and not be authorized for the low mins approaches the 4 BACS can do. Part 121 rules are different then 91 which is why you see corporate jets going in and out all the time and no other jet airlne operators.

does a bankruptcy judge have to approve route additions flown by mainline, or is bankrupt delta free to do as it pleases?

Oh Lord, I hope not. The judge doesn't become their CEO.

Right. They will likely share UA gates. However, I see the possibility of utilizing gate #3, which is only used for winter charters and Allegiant's evening ops. FYI, the airport has proposed an elaborate terminal expansion earlier this summer which will bring two more gates aswell (see here).

I'm glad to see a sub-topic on Fargo evolving within this thread!

Good news all around. I think the DSM service is a good idea so that DL can get in on some of the west-coast connections. Makes sense for prospective DL fliers in DSM (instead of connecting through CVG or ATL). I'll be interested to see how this route does.

Too weird...just last week I was wondering if DL might add SLC-BLI at some point in the near future, but I certainly wasn't expecting it to happen this soon. Cool beans.
