Both ads are great IMO. Not only because of the girls, but also it shows at bit of how the world was then. Somewhat more exotic... Flying wasn't yet like taking the bus. And how about security! Could we still make such ad like the one with jet roaring right above???  worried

If you guys like those movies, I suggest you check this site out:

http://www.archive.org/details/movies

This site is like a public library of historic multimedia. Here's what they say about their site:

"The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an ‘Internet library,’ with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format."

Its all free. There are old newsreels of airports, airplanes, old airline ads, educational movies on air traffic, pilots, etc, etc. Be patient with your searches, but I can say it will be worth it. (If you like old cartoons or even Little Rascals movies, there here too! There's also a great library of audio stuff, songs going back to the late 1800's.)

Here are two cool files I found recently. Both are downloadable in multiple formats (including mpeg4, and they are now on my iPod video!) Quality of the National commercial is pretty poor, but its free! These two movies are relatively small, most of the good movies are 35-50MB.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

This Southwest commercial is very nice from the artistic point of view. Great composition and camera angles. Emptyness (the sky, the runway in combination with the F/A and the A/C) also dictates shape. Thank you for showing!

Here is something you may find interesting...

I once saw a Southwest video (I believe it was for the 20th anniversary)...anyway....they specifically show the commercial of the 737 flying over the stewardess.

Herb Kelleher and someone else (I want to say it was Rollin King) make the comment that THAT was the only commercial where the "Southwest employee" was played by an actor and not a real Southwest employee. Apparently, according to them, it was too dangerous a shot for one of the company's own employees to take part in.
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

Ahhhhhh.....thanks for the trip down mammary lane. I do remember those spots as clearly now as when they first aired in the early 70s. We would often visit family in Texas when I was just a teen. I soon got my first taste of WN on a flight from DAL to SAT, I was hooked. This was a time when Stewardesses were...STEWARDESSES, not F/As, yeah I said it! The only males in the cabin were the passengers and flirting seemed almost to be a rite of passage between STEWARDESSES and passengers. With all of the retro-jets flying how about bringing back some of those retro hot pants? Of course you need the women to fill them in their proper proportions.

I was just about to ask the same thing before I saw this reply. I dont think I could have taken a flight back then without taking a cold shower afterward!  banghead

Yep until the late 70s I believe. You can thank the likes of Gloria Steinem for the extinction of these outfits.

Uniforms of that era were short. Here's PSA's.

Even AA had fairly short uniforms.

Yep...they sure did. I imagine if they were still allowed to wear them today, most posters on this board wouldn't have a problem with no assigned seating on SWA. Lordy how I miss the 70's.

I had the same 20 year video - the person talking about that ad was the VP of maintenance at the time - he also commented that of the few planes SWA had at that time, they picked the only one that trailed smoke. He was kind of embarassed.

That's the one, GoingBoeing!

How about the other early 70s commercial on there...

If I recall correctly...it had a scantily-clad Southwest stewardess sitting in the clouds with her legs crossed and asking...."How do we love you to Houston? Let me count the ways. 8 o'clock. 10 o'clock. Noon. 2 o'clock...." (all with the 70's-like porn music playing in the background).
