Asiana 747 In MKE With Slides Deployed

Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:55 am

I was just driving home from work today and I noticed a NW 747 cargo plane taxiing around the airport - and as I continued to drive, an Asiana 747-400 landed too. Just after I got home, someone at the airport called me and said the Asiana plane has its slides deployed with emergency vehicles. Anyone know what's going on...I can't get anything about it on my scanner.

Wow. Wonder what happened that they couldn't make it all the way to ORD.

Something happen at ORD that there were two 747s at MKE?

Someone accidentally cut a line and it caused the Radar to go out at ORD....Would explain the diversion but not the slides.

The slides were not deployed. There was a set of airstairs hooked to the plane and nothing else. I took a tug out to see it at about 1800 CST.

Must be nice to have a few 747s visiting in MKE for a change even if it is a diversion.

Wonder if Appleton or MSP got any action... Appleton can handle some of the bigger planes right?

Just had a scene from Airplane pop in my head where the one guy unplugs the runway lights, laughs, and plugs them back in.

The two diversions were NW916 and AAR236...hey FL737...you wouldn't have gotten a look at the 742's tail number, would you? it figures that these came in on the one day i didnt bring my camera. Oh well, it was nice of NWA to park that right next to us. Its not every day you see a jetbridge up to a 742F...

Years ago I was on a UA 747-400 from SFO to ORD. T-storms in the Chicago area sent us up to Milwaukee...along with seemingly hundreds of other planes. OK...so it seemed that way.

In any event, we were directed over to the ANG area where we parked and sat...and sat...and sat. It was like a chess game; our plane couldn't move until the one in front moved. And so on. So we were there for nearly SIX hours. We weren't allowed to simply go out to the active runway and zoom down to Chicago. We had to go across the main runway over to a fuel depot to get more fuel. We and a Lufthansa A340 got fuel together at around 11pm (we landed at around 5pm) and our two planes took off from MKE pretty much one after the other, and we both flew low-level down to Chicago and landed mere seconds apart...just like we took off.

It was a 'sleep-on-the-bench' ordeal down at O'Hare once we got there, but it was a memorable experience.

That is sad. So it took you essentially 6 hours to get from MKE to ORD...only takes less than 2 hours by bus from the train station. That is one of the few times that Amtrak is faster than a plane on Milwaukee to Chicago.

well since were talking about airline incidents or w/e...This came to my head so I thought I'd share it here, once while my grampa and I were at the spotting area at MKE, he told me that many years ago, a YX DC9 took off, and then had some kind of engine failure and crashed, is this true?

I hope it's NOT true, but that would mean you have a wicked, evil Grandpa. Grandpa's are NOT supposed to lie to Grandchildren. It's in the Constitution, on FOX News, and etched on some stone in the Himalayas. Not good, Grandpa.

So yea, no slides deployed. It's a bit rare to see one, let alone two 747's here in one day. Of course AF1 was here a few weeks ago.

ChrisNH Would your visit to MKE have been 3 or 4 years ago? I remember working a night like that. We had airplanes from all over packed in. Departing flights had to sit on the gate because every bit of taxiway was occupied. We couldn't even move aircraft to the YX hangar. All because of strong thunderstorms over Chicago. Yesterday's diversions were almost certainly caused by the radar outage at O'hare. MidEx105, N100ME, lost an engine at V1, just as it was rotating. This appears to have been an uncontained engine failure. The full details will never be known as to why the pilot responded correctly initially, then reversed his control inputs and stalled. Its possible that shrapnel from the failed engine went across the fuselage and damaged the other engine or fuel feed.

IF you are talking about yesterday (monday). ORD and MDW both lost ATC power for a few hours. Planes were being deverted all over the plane. I was in Dallas last night and about 60 passengers were put onto my flight which was the last flight of the day bacuase of the ATC problem .

The 747's are nice, but a year or two ago they had an AN-225 fly into MKE to pick up some high-powered generators built by the Kohler Co. and heading for somewhere in Africa (I believe it was Angola - ?). THAT was a sight to see! It was so large that it had to taxi to MKE's cargo ramp via the runways!

They landed on 7R about 1730 or so, one right after another...
