AQ To Begin SNA-SMF Flight

AQ is using its two new slots at SNA by adding a flight between SNA and SMF beginning May 2:
Flt 467 lv SNA 7:30a ar SMF 8:55a (continuing to OGG)
Flt 468 lv SMF 8:15p ar SNA 9:35p (continuing from OGG)

I'm surprised they are using their new slots for a flight to SMF because of competition from WN. I was expecting a flight to LIH so they would be serving all four Hawaiian Islands from SNA.

On another note, has service improved on AQ since they got out of bankruptcy? I switched all of my interisland flying to HA one year ago because of AQ's poor service including delayed flights and unhappy/rude employees. I hope things are better because we need two strong airlines serving HI and they were such a class act just a few years ago.

The route is only being used to keep the SNA slot occupied.

Basically the aircraft that would remain overnight in SMF is being used on an overnight SMF-SNA-SMF hop.

Look for Aloha to make use of the SNA slot fully once they either get another aircraft or drop a current route.

Competition from WN is not a factor in this route, as Laxintl its being used to keep the slot occupied. If they pick up a few passengers as well all the better, and they will.

Aside of the fact that the AQ flights are used to preserve some SNA slots, I find it kind of odd that an AQ plane would RON at SNA. Didn't AQ fly out of SNA at night to RNO and LAS because of the lack of space at SNA to RON airplanes?

I hope AQ will expand OAK again once they can obtain some aircraft.

I could very well see a few things possibly happening here. First, obviously they are required to hold the slot at SNA, use it or lose it, so, why not to another station already serviced by Aloha. RNO/LAS are both already covered, SAN would seem ridiculous and OAK already has AS flying against WN. When Aloha starts to pull together and part II of the CH 11 emergence is enforced, I think we will see some route changes. I wouldn't be surprised if the SMF flight times changed and SMF was placed as a tag-on to either SAN/SNA. I can see Aloha using OAK/SAN/SNA as their west coast destinations, and then other inland cities as tag-ons from there. This would combine two principles: one still effeciently serve not only a west coast beach community from the Hawaiian islands, but, Aloha can also serve inland cities and routes with convenient stopovers, and with that, pull some pax from the O&D from those additional routes.

Examples of those routes, look at the RNO market from SNA, now averaging 304 daily pax. After the Reno Air buyout to AA, when not only AA but also HP discontinued their nonstop flights, the daily pax total dropped. With AQ reentry, the numbers increased by 25% based upon SNA figures released, nothing to call home about, but still, it was a small increase. So, I looked at SLC, a market that shows 616 daily pax and only Delta serving the route nonstop. Now, I am not sure nor saying that AQ would love to fight DL head on, especially since DL just added quite a bit of Hawaii service from their SLC hub, but the idea, it shows that maybe there are more inland markets that Aloha has their sites on. Before CH 11, I remember all the rumors when Aloha reps were in Denver looking at gates, a market that has 817 daily pax, but then again, a fare share of options between UA and F9. Although denied, Aloha did request a slot exemption for DCA to offer nonstop service to SNA, the D.C area shows an average of 217 pax. I actually think the service might have worked quite well, but it was compared too closely to the parallel B737-700 service that AS offers just up the street from LAX. Oh well. Aloha I would think would have their sites on more markets as these, destinations not served at all nonstop, but if so, little competition where Aloha's solo daily flight might be able to pull a few of the pax over to cover the costs in getting seats filled as the flight stopped on its way over the Pacific. TUS/ABQ/MCI/COS, I don't know, but, just ideas.

When Aloha did have their BUR-LAS flight, it wasn't anything worth competing against WN, but, with the fares that they offered, putting pax on base fares still were able to cover some of the costs, and although weekends were always higher than midweek, Aloha averaged 59 pax boarding to LAS, not too bad I would think with just the one rotation each way, especially a late night to LAS and such an early return. I wish the BUR service actually lasted, because BUR airport rugrats always rumored that the BUR tag-on was going to be DEN/SLC, and I actually think that Aloha would have done quite well on one of those routes.

One last question though back to SNA and I did a search but cannot find. I know that besides Aloha, WN also received two slots, which we all know now are being used for new MDW nonstop service, but, who was the other airline that received the slots handed out? Also, where did all these slots come from? I know Midwest returned thier slots that were used for MCI service, but where else? Thanks

has United decided what their slots are used for? more ORD with the WN announcement of MDW service or DEN/SFO?

No, I just remembered, I got it, I know where UA is headed, probably their new RJ mini-hub in SAT, I can just see it, SNA-SAT nonstop service, not!!! It does have 135 daily pax, but, not!!!

SMF-SNA....reminds me of a certain two-tone orangwe and white outfit with planes that were "happy" to take you anywhere in California, especially if you were a Poor Sailor....

BUR-LAS was an OK flight, it flew late, like 10:30 pm or so, it was the last flight of the day to LAS, latter than any of the WN departures at the time 09/2003. The LAS-BUR run left early in the morning, like 6:30 am. AQ than dropped the BUR segment alltogether, started flying LAS-HNL N/S. Flight left LAS at 7:00 am, arrive in HNL around 10:30 am or so. HNL-LAS left at 8:00 am or so, arrive in LAS around 4:30 pm. When I flew that route in Sept. 2004, the plane was approx. 90 % full both ways. Seems like now the LAS flight goes through SNA on the way to HNL. I would think there is more than enough O/D to sustain the LAS-HNL N/S flights, LAS is a popular destination from the islands. Maybe TZ and HA along with AQ was too much capacity for the N/S market.

He's talking about PSA, which was know by many in its early days as Poor Sailors Airline due to it linking two large navy bases in Oakland and San Diego.
