Man Jumps Off Airplane At Detroit Metropolitan Airport
Police Have Man In Custody

POSTED: 12:43 pm EST March 7, 2006

A man is in custody after jumping out of the emergency exit of a Northwest airplane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport Tuesday.

Officials say the man was being deported on an immigration violation. The plane was still on the runway, at gate A34, when the man jumped off.

The man is currently being treated for injuries.

A34 is on the big plane side of side of the NWA terminal. 9's are usually parked on the odd number gates. So from a 757 or A319/320, thats quite a fall.

I'm figuring that this was copied and pasted in but were they at the gate or on the runway?  scratchchin

If it was at A34, that is a gate where the smallest plane you'll see is an A319. That gate is in the huge alleyway in between A and B/C terminals. They called it a runway because reporters are stupid and never do the appropriate research to use correct terminology in most anything.

He jumped out of a Boeing 747-400 operating at NW flight 11 from DTW-NRT if the news got the gate correct.

Is jumping from your plane instead of using the gate some sorta new "cool" trend?

What some dumbass he is jumping from a 747! They probably took him to the hospital first.

This is one of the rare occasions that the 737 has an advantage over the A320.. Big grin

It's amazing that he survived- I remember reading about FAs that have fallen from the plane and dying or becoming severley paralised.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but I used to work for XJ several years ago and we heard a story back then of a NW F/A that fell out of a 757. She survived, but was off work for a LONG time on workmans comp due to her injuries. And then her first day back, she was telling her crew what happened and then she was showing her crew how she did it and...............She fell out again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I dont know if this is true, but it was told to us as a true story. Personaly if this really did happen, if I was that F/A and I survived the 2nd time, I'd just quit from humiliation. But then again it could just me a rumor or "airline story"

yeah, it's really the only fashionable way to make an impromptu exit from an airplane these days.

Lets see! Security stops people from getting in to restricted areas, like the ramp. But this tool things he is going to be able to jump from basically any aircraft, and run away without security or the police catching him.

What a Moron.

What were they deporting him for, Complete stupidity?

Seems to be quite the method of exit these days. I have to say I've seen 4-5 posts regarding such actions in the past month.

Best.

A man being deported from the U.S. was at the center of a bizarre incident at Metro Airport. Police said he boarded a Northwest Airlines plane and then jumped out the emergency exit before the plane took off.

Yong Sheng Zhu, a 26-year-old Chinese national, had over stayed his visa and was recently taken into custody to be deported.

Around noon on Tuesday, immigration officials escorted Zhu to his seat on Northwest flight #11. After Zhu was seated the agents waited in the jet-way to make sure the plane would takeoff. That’s when one of the agents noticed him on the tarmac.

Investigators said Zhu opened the rear emergency door and jumped from the plane while it was parked at the gate. It was a 20 foot fall down to concrete tarmac.

Gregory Palmore, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said "That is a tremendous jump. That’s basically equivalent to jumping of a second story building. We find it strange because individuals are aware that they are going to be removed from the country and I’m sure, at some point, it’s built into their database, their mind that they’re going to return home."
Zhu was taken into custody and then transported to the hospital with a possible broken back.

"No criminal history. He’s been vetted through all the databases to make sure he wasn’t a public safety threat. We wouldn’t have put an individual on a plane that would have been a safety threat to the passengers," said Palmore.

When Zhu is released, investigators said, he will be given a one way ticket to China...again. Investigators said he will have an escort next time.

Amen to that! I get so frustrated with the media's lack of integrity ... esp. when reporting aviation related stories. The misinformation confuses and misleads the public.  banghead

While we all sit here thinking that he was a moron or a dumbass, I guess it must have REALLY been bad in his own mind to return back to China and a tumble from the rear exit door of a 744 was a better option. Kind of makes you wonder why he was so adverse to returning home?  Sad

Well, there's an idea. Someone being deported.. you'd think they'd have someone with him anyways. Or, is our INS agency working on the "good faith" policy anymore?

Maybe his broken back will be a reminder not to be an ass and just go home like he's supposed to. Oh wait, I'm sure there's some lawyer under some rock somewhere that'll try and get him all gummed up in the system.

What a country!!!  crazy

Well once he's placed on the plane, I guess the thinking is "where is he gonna go?" ...

Apparently nobody thought about someone pulling a bonehead stunt like this and opening a door/jumping.

I too am amazed that no one else said this before...

Similarly, we also waste no time labling the desperate souls who die trying to get a better life by hiding in a wheel well or something as morons etc.

I love my country and have always been mostly a law abiding citizen, but as a human being (and without knowing the whole story) I wouldn't think someone is a moron for trying to get a better life. Maybe he has no other "less moronic" option?

But thats me, and my opinion.
