Why No A340-500 For VS?

Wed Mar 08, 2006 8:30 am

Why there's no A340-500 for VS? I know they have the 600s but no 500s. Unless they are not planning to do ultra long range from LHR?. Whats the chance of them buying the 500s at least they are going for 4 engines 4 long hauls.

There are not many routes where VS would need the range of the A345 that cant be done with their existing fleet.

Which other European carrier has (or has plans of getting) A345s?

Europe is just not at the right place on the planet to allow the existence of ultra-long-haul flights. You can go anywhere non-stop except Oceania with a 744 or a 773ER, and even a 772LR (which has supposedly a longer range than the A345) cannot go non-stop to Australia, NZ, etc, so I don't see any market for the A345 in Europe.

Ultra-long-range pax airliners do not fit European airlines' networks, like the pax A380 does not fit North American airlines' networks. This is a fact to deal with in today's aviation world.
When I doubt... go running!

None. It would only be nessessary for some flights to Australia from western europe.

What are your (generally everyone's) thoughts on VS's future fleet? How long will the 744's be there, A343's? More A380's and A346's? Do you really think A350 might become a reality with VS?- Is it at all necessary?

My personal opinion (for what it's worth!) is that VS will eventually be all Airbus. Once the A380 enters service, won't they have one of the most modern fleets around? Will they retire the 747s? How many 747-400s have they got compared to A340-300s and 600s and how old are these 747s? The last VS 747-400 I flew on came from Alitalia I think, am I right?

Incidentally, I'm not an aviation professional, I'm simply a member of the public with an unhealthy interest in the subject! When I can, I make a point of trying to fly with VS rather than say BA, simply because I just like their attitude towards the paying customer. I've only once had a problem with them, dreadful Premium Economy seats and crabby staff on a MCO/LGW flight. I complained on return and they generously dealt with it to my entire satisfaction. We're off to Australia summer 2007 and are already looking at flights, I guess my first choice would again be VS, particularly as I've not yet flown on an A340-600!

I appreciate the fact that most paying customers don't care what they're flying on as long as it's got wings, so I guess I'm a bit different. A modern young fleet is important to me and I have made decisions on who to fly with, simply because of the equipment... How sad am I?

I have a feeling they'll dump that slogan pretty soon if they wanna stay competitive coz they'll probably order the A330 on Steroids (A350) or the 787 down the road.

Why there's no A340-500 for VS?

Unless they expand, they don't need it.

It's already being done by BA and AF, (not sure about LH), with their existing equipment.

My 'A330 on Steroids' term have nothing to do with the 787. Airbus have said it's a 'warmed up' A330 and the 787 doesn't share even a Michelin with the 767. 787 is not a 767 dirivitive.... although I like your "767 on oestrogen" line.. LOL

I was trying to say that no major airline in Europe needs an A345 to make that flight. They can do it with their existing equipment. 777's, A340's, 747's. No European airline needs the range and weight of the A345 to make South America runs.

LHR-EZE, FRA-EZE, CDG-EZE or even CDG-SCL are currently flown without any restrictions by BA/LH/AF with their B772ER/B744/A343/A346.
No need to add an extra a/c type for those routes.

YULWinterSkies is absolutely right in its reply#2.
Due to the geographical situation of Europe, no European airline need an A345 or a B772LR (PAX) for its network.
All the destinations of those airlines can be reached nonstop from their main HUB with their current equipement, and in any case, even if BA would like to fly nonstop LHR-SYD/AKL oe AF CDG-PPT or CDG-NOU the A345 or the B772LR won't have enough range capabilities (Ok, Ok, I Know, the B772LR is supposed to be able to do LHR-SYD, according to the winds/season/bla bla bla ... it's been discussed 10000times).
