Usable Closed Concourses/terminals

Wed Mar 08, 2006 9:28 am

My apologies if this has already been discussed (I dont want to get slammed by the "This has already been discussed" crowd).

Which airport in the United States, if any, have unused terminals or concourses that could, with minimal work, be reopened for use?

By this....I mean....the terminal structure is there. Just no jetways, no gate podiums, etc. If an airline chose to use them, are there any airports that have closed terminals or concourses that COULD be reopened with some work.
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

Pittsburgh's E concourse. No jetbridges, set up for things like Beeches and Saabs, but still about 30 "gates" (doorways) that could be used for anything from a CRJ on down.

The old terminal building at Harrisburg Int'l (MDT) is currently closed completely. The new terminal was opened in September of 2004. The old one was built sometime in the late 80's.
It has been said that it didn't conform to a post 9/11 world, yet, it operated until 9/04. It is complete with jetways, baggage handling, resturants and ticketing counters.
I think it could be used again, if necessary. But, that is doubtful. I don't think MDT would ever get so busy that they would need it. There is talk of either converting it into office space, or just tearing it down altogether.
I for one, would love to have an office that sat right on the tarmac with a view of the runway.

They shuttered an under-20 year old building? Wow Harrisburg really does get everything. Should have put it on a flatbed and brought it to Allentown.  Smile

COS has a 5 gate concourse sitting completely empty, complete with jetways. It could handle anything up to 737/A320 aircraft I believe. It had lately been assumed around COS that WN would pick up the concourse...look how that turned out.

The entire Syracuse airport is as good as closed. The passenger numbers are just a fraction of what they used to be. I could think about how nice it would be to see what the US Airways gates looked like in the 80s and early 90s, but then I would just get sad, then mad that we don't have anything close to that anymore, and probably won't ever again.  Sad

DAL

Before DFW opened, it had 65 gates in operation. Now, less than 20 are used between WN, CO, & AA.

I don't actually think that any terminals have been destroyed at DAL, so I guess you could go back to the full capacity...

Terminals HAVE been destroyed at DAL. The entire Braniff portion of the Red concourse is GONE completely. Also, the TI terminal is gone.
The North concourse is abandoned aircraft wise, but houses a lot of WN offices, I believe.
At it's heyday, DAL had 56 gates, not 65.

In any event, I hate to see these places abandoned or boarded up. Especially when the only reason is to have something 'new' or 'more modern.'
Grrrr. Bring back the cool stuff, I say.

Lynchburg (LYH) has an area just past security called 'gate 1' it seems at one time they had hopes of getting mainline service, now they only have DL Connection (CRJ) and US Express Dash 8's....you have to go down an esclator to get to the current gates (2-5). If anyone has any knowledge into the Gate 1 area please let me know. BTW, I tried taking a picture of it after I got through security but they stopped me and made me delete the photo Sad

Terminal 5 at JFK would be cramped by today's security and accessability requirements, but it could be used.

The old terminal at ONT... not modern, not exactly the height of passenger accomidation (all of the gates are outside and at ground level) but in a pinch...

[It's been mothballed by LAWA but receives use as a background for movies/TV shows... for example, Catch Me If You Can had several scenes in/around the terminal]

I kind of miss that place now...

It's a shame too, because I thought the old MDT terminal was a very nice building.
Though, I have to admit, the new one is stunning.
But, I would say that if someone handed me $24 million, I could probably build a pretty spectacular one, as well.

It is beautiful, I just thought the old one was some hole in the wall that needed replaced.

You get some beautiful aerial views of it from around 15,000 if you take UA's Saab to ABE from IAD, they use HAR as one of their waypoints. Next time I'm on that if its a nice day I'll try to get my first ever onto A.net maybe.

How about terminal 1 in CVG? Other than USAirways few flights, the terminal is completely abandonded for all intents and purposes, and there is no LCC presence whatsoever.

The E concourse at PIT is closed. Far from an ideal space but can be reworked. With some juggling an entire airside concourse could be freed up as well.

That would be the one that was there BEFORE the one that was built in the late 80's.
I didn't live here at the time, but from what I understand, It was nothing but an old hangar left over from the Olmstead AFB days. Had to walk right out across the tarmac to boar. How uncivilized!

I have tried to get shots of MDT as well. I know there are none on A.net. Unfortunately, I always seem to be on the wrong side of the plane.
I have scoped out MDT and have found a place where I might be able to get some good shots of the whole airport, from on the ground!
MDT sits on the edge of the river, and on the west shore, there is a big ridge, probably at least 300ft above the river. The airpost actually has their radar equipment up on that ridge. I have to look at a map to find the right road, but I think it could be a good vantage point.
Then the only hurdle would be getting the photo through, without rejection!  rotfl

I was just thinking of that. Last time I was through ORD, I had that expirience. Though, at ORD, once you walk up that wooden, temporary looking gang way thingy, the building isn't so bad.

The old Piedmont/USAir gates at SYR are still being used. I think JetBlue took over one or two of them and USAir still owns the others. It was only about five-six gates at its peak.

There is an old terminal in Louisville that sits abandoned.

I had it the last time too, it was -7(F, not C, for any metric A.netters) outside, and windy giving a wind chill of about -25. Lovely day for no jetbridge, and then I remembered why ORD is only a tiny notch below PHL in places to avoid.

Don't forget the 1950's era "Terminal B" at BDL. One concourse is still active for AA, AC, and YX, but the other half of the terminal sees only limited use for charter flights since completion of the new concourse in Terminal A and the subsequent relocation of NW, HP, WN, and DL.

Terminal B is actually slated for replacement/demolition, to be replaced by a new third concourse for Terminal A, located where the under-used portion of Terminal B lies now.

At SLC, we have the old "S" Gates, lol. You can walk right out from the B6, CO, and Salmon Air counters and walk in there and get some SWEET views of the AA MD-80 monopoly and the lone F9 A318/319 at the end, with a B6 tail sticking out behind it. HP also used to park a CR7/9 out right in front of it overnight, although I dont know if they do anymore, or if ALL flights out of SLC on US/HP are now up to 319/320's

At MSY, CO and WN used to share Concourse B. When CO moved to Concourse D a few years ago, the gates were removed from the tip of Concourse B, and the old CO area of the concourse is still unoccupied.

Believe it or not, the old Imperial Terminal at LAX is still standing and unused. In fact, you can still see the outdoor baggage claim from Imperial Hwy. A buddy of mine at LAWA tells me that they aren't going to reopen it for pax use but plenty of LCCs have tried to get in there to save money and make access easier!

They've also now opened an aviation museum in there, but I'm pretty sure it only has odd hours during weekdays so I can never make it in time.

Piedmont (eventually US Air, then US Airways) had a small focus city/hub in Syracuse way back when. You actually (according to those who were around then) had to wait in line to take off. Never thought I say this, but having to wait in line to take off at SYR would bring a smile to my face.

No... US Airways used to operate gates 1-12, actually. They now operate out of gates 5-10, at the end of the [quite dated] concourse. JetBlue uses gate 15, which US never leased, for it's whopping 3 daily flights (4 during periods in April). Now, aside from the B6 gate (which really isn't in the concourse), and the sole NWA gate, the remaining gates are empty. It's quite depressing. Where is WN and/or FL when you need them?

Yes, DAY used to be a US/Piedmont focus city until the early nineties, went out about the same time as the focus city in IND.

IGM used to have HP Express service to PHX, stopped somewhere else along the way, Flagstaff or Prescott. This was pre- 9/11, I really do not recall security or screening being much of anything, though I assume it was there. Nice little terminal for the town, now unused.

DET has:

PASSENGER TERMINAL

53,000 square-foot passenger terminal includes space for restaurants, retail concessions, car rental facilities, airline offices, baggage pick-up and claim areas, boarding areas and passenger lounges.

totally unused since Pro Air went bye-bye. ML 1 and WN used to fly from the airport, WN closed up DET totally in 1992 or 1993.

Quoting N702ML (Reply 48):
Are you sure about this?

I thought so, then again I could be wrong. Somebody else was in DET with WN in the late 80's/early 90's. Guess I can't remember who.

Also PMD, looks like they lost their service to VGM, Scenic showing all flights as cancelled. Who's next to try that airport ?
