Future United Destinations?

With the possibility of a SFO-CAN route opening up, anyone here see any further expansion plans for UA? In the wake of Delta's aggressive expansion, I just thought I'd ask.

Since United's primary target is the business traveler, I see future routes going to areas with high concentrations of commerce. CAN is an example of this. In light of that argument, I could see United starting service back up to MXP or DEL, and maybe even expanding to BOM. The new code-share service with South African will bring Star Alliance routes to Johannesburg, so no need to expand there.

Perhaps instead UA will continue to focus on expanding into the Caribbean...

Any thoughts?

I am surprised they have not tried to expand in Asia and become the dominant US carrier to the region. For them to try and emulate Delta, I personally feel they will fail on all the new European routes out of ATL, woould be unreasonable given thier current standing.

What about some weekly frequencies to places like TPE, or BKK?
Perhaps some European expansion out of IAD or ORD?

Actullay I would not be surprised if UA starts looking to Africa and South Asia more. They have a very extensive route in East Asia and the Pacific and need to put their efforts in other areas as well.

I could see JNB as a code-share from MIA (UA and MIA thread a while back) and from ORD. I would not be surprised if eventually CPT is also served.

I personally would like to see UA offer more flights that over-fly Japan or offer flights to more U.S. destinations from Japan (but not NRT). However UA really needs to expand to new markets where they do not have a large presence.

Probably UA will start new route Washington to Warsaw after new terminal will be opend next year at Okecie Airport

LAX/BNE or SFO/BNE?

QF NOW FLY LAX/BNE 5/week so they must know something & it's shorter than LAX/SYD & SFO/SYD so weight restrictions out of west coast would be less. QF introducing SYD/SFO 3 times/week soon !!!

They already serve TPE and BKK daily.

TPE is via NGO (UA831) and NRT (UA881)
BKK is via NRT (UA837)

I can dream can't I? Of Course NH will do things first. We have NGO build up, KIX build up and movement from large aircraft to small/medium with frequency to take advantage of both runways at NRT. NH will totally expand and improve their product.

As for UA. I will add a little here. Europe for UA is not going to work like CO or DL. UA has too much of a relationship with its star partners to do anything there. But Africa is just waiting to be tapped and UA I think will go in.

UA has applied to fly ORD-VIE so i would expect that to be announced in the near future.

We know they want SFO-CAN.........for me the big hole for UA in Asia is India and I feel its just a matter of time before we see them back there, in Delhi and Bombay and who knows even Bangalore, all booming business centres.

I would love to see UA operate ORD-JNB/CPT one day, but I think that might be a few years off.

However, if they're not going to acquire any new widebodies in the
near future, then routes that require 2 aircraft for daily utilization
are probably not at the top of the list.

Really? That's the first I've heard of it. That is awesome news for me as both an Austrian and American citizen. What aircraft will it fly on, 767, or 777? Will IAD-VIE be a possibility, too?

correct, on the ORD-VIE route this will be flown by a 767-300.....thats assuming they get the route of course.

Some more domestic destinations out of DEN,ORD,IAD would be nice..
With RJs of course. No every city has the pleasure of having United.

Didn't UA just discontinue DUS back in 2001 because the load factor or yield wasn't high enough? Also, I think Lufthansa flies to Dus from both MUC and FRA, right?

Ament to that...why UA doesn't take over this route is beyond me, unless its just down to the fact they dont have enough aircraft?

With Chicago's huge Polish population, I would think that an ORD-WAW route would be profitable.

I would love to see United bring back ORD-GDL. With such a huge Mexican population in Chicago that route should do well for them. American code shares with Mexicana (2x Daily). ATA only has 1 daily MDW-GDL and they always seem to be full. Not to mention the high yield.

LOT already flies this route twice a day IIRC, and UA codeshares on those.

UA needs to focus on serving new routes that aren't served by Star partners, especially with the shortage of long haul aircraft.

Lima can be flown nonstop from Washington.IAD via the 757-200. There is no problem there, CO flies EWR-LIM via the 752.

Santiago, can be fed via VARIG through GRU..

I doubt that UA will add any Eurpoean destinations with a 752. They appear to be unwilling to fly to Eurpoean desitnations unless it can support at least a 3-class 763. There is also the problem that only p.s. 757s are 3-class and I believe that only the 2-class Hawaii planes are ETOPS. There is limited benefit to adding long, thin routes.

UA seems committed to serving South America from IAD.

I would agree with the thread starter that UA would look to restore flights to business destinations that had been dropped. MXP is more likely than than DEL since India is overserved in the short run.

It amazes me that P.S. has not been expanded to the following routes:

LHR-JFK, BOS, IAD
BOS-SFO
IAD-SFO

The sale of 2 or 3 slots could give UA a nice chunk of change. The only slots in turn they could hold on to would be:

SFO-LHR : (UA, needs 2x SFO for both Premium/Connecting Traffic)
LAX-LHR : (UA, needs 1x LAX for Premium feed)
IAD-LHR : (UA, needs 2x IAD for both Premium/Connecting Traffic)

ORD-LHR : (UA, needs 2x ORD for both Premium/Connecting Traffic)

I seriously doubt we will see UA in either of these markets. UA does not have the right US gateways to sustain more destinations into South America beyond what they currently operate (GRU, EZE, etc.).

However I would like to see UA capitalize on Asia and can see them, one day, offering:
SFO-DEL/BOM: 787/77L?
SFO-SGN-HAN: 777
SFO-CAN: obviously, as already mentioned
SFO-SIN: 787/77L?
ORD-SIN: 787/77L?
DEN-NRT: 777
IAD-BOM: 787/77L?

Maybe some other flights to Europe:
IAD-GVA
IAD-SVO
IAD-MAD (again)

ORD has already non-stop service to WAW. It would be very nice if UA started at least thrice-weekly IAD-WAW using 767-300. There is enough market share to justify this flight.
LOT wanted to start WAW-BWI at the begining of 2002, but after 9/11 they backed-off out of the deal.

I could definetly see UA start some NRT to India service. The Asia India service they ran prevously was popular with west coast premium travelers. I think with the lack of India service from NRT and UA's 5th freedom rights there along with the NH code share it just makes since. Not to mention they do have alot of widebody slots still there.

I also wouldnt be shocked if you saw a HNL to GUM route in the future.

Look for a CAN Star Alliance "hub" with new membership in Star of at least 2 Chinese airlines. (reported elsewhere)

maybe UA should look at HNL/BNE & HNL/MEL. They could do these using a 763ER & it would improve the options in flying to OZ.

Australians who don't live in SYD hate flying to SYD domestically to then have to chnage terminals, on either side of runways, which is incredibly time consuming, getting a bus.

Apparently there's a train running from domestic to international terminal at SYD, but no one seems to use it???
