Movie Stars That Actually Fly

Thu Mar 09, 2006 3:51 pm

hi everyone.
We all know (or should by now) that John Travolta is a pilot and has his commercial certificate. (at least he should since he flies around in his 707). But what was new to me tonight is that Tom Cruise also holds a commercial license. So my question to everyone out there is which other famous person (actors/actresses, singers, political individuals) also has a private or higher and actually flies themselves around.

One last thing, Mr Cruise seems to currently be training to fly a P51. My brother saw him flying the aircraft. Did the landing, take-off and a couple high-speed fly-bys of the airport.

Harrison Ford flies helicopters and has crashed at least once and thankfully walked away with only minor injuries.

Dexter Holland is a pilot. In fact, he's an ATP and CFI with a couple type ratings. He's owns and pilots a Citation CJ2 and has done a solo around the world flight in it. Also has a PhD in, if I remember right, molecular biology. Pretty impressive guy.

Now you're asking yourself, who is Dexter Holland? He's the singer for the band The Offspring.

Aside from him, there are lots of other famous pilots out there. Both John Kerry and both George Bush-es are pilots. So are Dr Phil, Patrick Swayze, Angelina Jolie, Kurt Russel, Alan Jackson, Arnold Palmer, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, etc

who this guy?

being a actor/actress doesn't make you a movie star.

Is GW Bush an actor? He certainly doesn't come across as a president, but maybe he's acting in front of the cameras ???

We mustn't forget the greatest celebrity pilot of them all Mr N707JT. I believe is also has a type rating for 744s as well.

Also, Irish racing driver Eddie Irvine flies helicopters and light aircraft.

Niki Lauda obviously
I also believe that the Sultan of Brunei can fly some of his collection as well.

He wasn't flying the plane, but Orlando Bloom was on my flight from LHR to LAX on Monday this week. I stopped to let him go by me as we joined the jet bridge and got a 'thanks' from him.

I've seen a TV show on Discovery Channel where he take viewers around the world showing different commercial jets that have flown commercially. I can remember shows on the Comet, Concorde, B727 and I think A320. Other ac (specially Boeing) received attention, but never saw those shows. He flies in all of them (except the Comet, of course). Nice show.

He says his favourite bird it's the 757.

Good luck.

Actually, you are still a pilot if you don't have a medical. You're just not allowed to act as as a required crewmember of an aircraft on a flight requiring a medical certificate. Your pilot's license doesn't go away.

For example, flight instructors and glider pilots are not required to have medicals.

Jimmy Stewart rates the top billing in my opinion. Flew (I think) B-17s, B-24s in WW2 and B-47s, B-52s in the 50s. He rose to very high rank in USAF (Brig. General) and did his own flying in some his movies. Very impressive guy.

-Mark Martin (flies his own Citation)
-Bill Elliott
-Greg Biffle
-Former/maybe future ESPN pit reporter John Kernan
-Bobby Allison
-Bobby Labonte (saw in a USA Today article that he has some flight experience)
-Jack Roush (team owner...almost died in an experimental plane crash in 2002)
-Dario Franchitti (IRL driver, helicopter pilot)
-Jeff Burton (saw in the USA Today article that he's interested in learning, not sure if he's done any flying or not)

I also wonder if Carl Edwards is working on any ratings. He advertises a flying experience/simulated combat contest where you can fly with him & was also shown at the controls of Jack Roush's Citation on an episode of "NASCAR: Beyond the Wheel" last year.

As for the ones who died in planes, Alan Kulwicki was killed in a plane crash, but he was a passenger. I don't think he was a pilot. Davey Allison was a pilot & crashed while piloting a helicopter at Talladega in 1993, almost taking short track legend Red Farmer with him. Farmer survived, Allison died.

According to the FAA Airmen Certification Database, the following can be found:

John Kerry
Commerical Pilot (ASEL, ASES, AMEL, Inst. Airplane)

Lets not forget possibly the most infamous of famous flyers... John F. Kennedy Jr. who incidently did not have a Night Rating. Go figure.

I know a couple of Aussie V8 racecar drivers fly, namely Todd Kelly (PA-31), Neil Crompton (C182) and Larry Perkins (probably at least a PA-28).

James Woods and President George Bush both are commercially rated to fly.

I've seen Dennis Quaid's a/c before at Lakeway Airport (3R9).

Michael Dell also is rated to fly and I've seen a few of his aircraft at Lakeway (3R9), Spicewood Airport (88R), and AUS.

Cheers!

John Denver can no longer pass his FAA medical, hence he is no longer a pilot.

Technically, your always a pilot, just not an active one with a medical.. Based on the fact he'd have a very tough time passing the physical now...

Quoting Monteycarlos (Reply 35):
John F. Kennedy Jr. who incidently did not have a Night Rating.

The US doesn't have "night rating" as part of your private pilots license, you have to do afew hours of night time with an instructor instead.
