Why Would Fed Ex Fly OAK To SFO?

Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:09 pm

Fed Ex flies this quite frequently but my question is why. How much does it cost for to operate this 2 minute flight. Wouldn't it be cheaper to truck over the containers? Am I missing something.

If i remember correctly its mostly for positioning in or out of an international leg... but then again, Bay area traffic can be a beast.

In Southern California Fedex flies several such short hop flights also.

Between LAX, Fedex operates A310 and A300 equipment to places as close as Burbank, Orange County and Ontario.

In general its more efficient to operate a single such widebody then place many many trucks on the road particularly during the evening rush hour cutoff time period.

This flight was at 1:53 am. Again, any idea how much $$$ it costs to fly this.

I am guessing FedEx operates this to capture the international cargo arriving into SFO on other airlines and ships them across the Bay to their distribution center in OAK (they do have one there, right?). I guess it is cheaper and more efficient to operate OAK-SFO-OAK than to try and truck the goods across the bridge.

I'll bet they didn't do OAK-SFO-OAK.

It would appear that this MD11 took off as flight 87 to Narita @ 4:04 am.

I don't know if you are missing anything, but they are missing the Bay Bridge!!

I think this might be the real answer. It picks up some cargo in SFO, then picks up more in OAK, then goes on to NRT.

It's a tag on/positioning flight. As said above the plane goes on to Narita. FedEx has a small facility at SFO and its most likely cheaper and easier to fly the MD11 over at 2am, then to take inbound cargo to SFO, unload it, truck it to OAK, then load it again. I don't think the plane actually comes from OAK with much cargo on it. My buddy at FedEx SFO said it came in frequently with nothing on it. Then some day (holidays mainly), half the positions were taken.

Perhaps, but it wouldn't be too cheap to truck over the MD11.

Would the pilot talk to the SFO tower just before take-off roll, during taxi, or before push back???  boggled
