Airbus To Announce New A340 Deal Soon

Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:43 pm

According to a press report Airbus expects to "announce double-diggit sales of the aircraft soon". Quote from Noel Forgeard.

LH might order some more, together with some more A380's, to replace their 744s, instead of buying the 748. And then there's offcourse SIA that is expected to anounce a widebody order soon, aswell as QF. Maybe the dubbel digit number involves more than one airline.

With their current fleet of 777's I find it highly unlikely that they would go for a340's, unless some a345's. But then it wouldn't be a double-digit order. I suspect QR as well. Would be great news for Airbus, but I still hope for a new A346 customer.

Well LH is expected to make a wide-body order this month so it wouldn't be surprising if they added to their A340-600 fleet.

We've been surprised by orders larger than this one... so there certainly is a possibility that SQ or QF have finalized their extra-long-haul decision...

One point worth making in relation to the A346 is that despite the various topics around it on A.Net, it is actually a good aircraft, and airlines operating it can expect it to fulfil their requirements very nicely, (early teething issues notwithstanding) - it's just unfortunate for the A346 that it's direct competitor happens to be one of the best aircraft ever built!

Well, VS ordered ten more a year ago. Is Virgin Blue also going international? If so the a346 would be a bit big for them. I would think they would order the 787 or a350. The a346 is IMHO also too big for Mexicana, SAS and Sri Lankan. They both currently operate only smaller aircraft. You never know with chinese orders of course, so China Eastern might be a possibility. Thai may be also a possibility, but they have some 772's coming right? As for SAA, I have no idea. Could be a possibility if they want to replace the 744's with a 380's (like rumoured recently) and more a346's.
But with the recent cancellation of the LOI for the 773's by Qatar, it seems like too much of a co-incidence that now a a340 order is looming.

Just my humble opinion...

Not entirely out of the realms of possibility that they may sign for ten more then?

Philippine Airlines, though in financial problems have been rumored to order A346 for some time now. It was believed to be ordered at the Singapore air show.

Could this be the PR order for 10 to replace its current 6 B744's.

If SQ were to sell their five A340-500s to Airbus and then lease ten from Airbus (probably the best deal Airbus can hope to get from SQ now), then one could arguably call that a double-digit order, but I would not.

"Noel Forgeard said Airbus could keep the long-distance jet as a niche aircraft but acknowledged its four-engine design, unpopular with airlines except for those flying polar routes, was a "shortcoming"."

So much for the once highly touted "4 engines 4 the long-haul" strategy. But I give Noel credit here in being more realistic than his pitchman, Leahy. Not surprising he'd want to put out an announcement like this; news of ANY new order is desperately needed to help restore lagging confidence in the A340's continued viability. Quite frankly, I doubt any potential NEW customers would really go for the recent Airbus suggestion that the company might monetarily compensate for the fuel-burn (vs. the 777) deficit; it sounds a lot like U.S. carmakers offering rebates to sell lagging models against foreign competition, rather lame. Also, current A340 operators would be up in arms if they didn't get it, also. I agree with speculation a big order is for a current large A340 operator expanding their fleet; it then makes no sense to switch to another type. The only question now is WHO?

It could be Venezuela's state-owned airline Conviasa.

They already got an A342 from UX and they said they plan to get more long-haul planes for future routes to Europe and Asia. Also if you consider all the money that the Venezuelan state currently receives because of oil exports, this isn't a crazy idea.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe EK has already placed a large order for A346HGWs and a few A345s. I would be suprised if they would dip back in to double digit order, especially with them looking at A350 vs. 787. I'm with QR or Etihad.

Well, I really don't see Emirates ever ordering another A340. I also don't see any 777 airlines like BA ordering the A340.

The most likely is either Thai or Qatar.

Although, I don't know why they didn't go for their 777 option.

I suspect the world would hear about this if it was true. Aibus love their publicity and I love Airbus for their publicity stunts. However, it is possible that the HGW version is appealing to airlines and one such as QR has decided against the 777. After all QR seems most likely as they had intended to go Boeing since Dubai and then changed their minds about it. So a switch towards Airbus can be predicted and for 20 odd frames- it would seem plausible. Other possibilities incle VS or a Chinese Airline. LH could order more but not double digits, AF unlikely, smaler carriers such as Turkish Air and Finnair, Olympic etc wouldn't order double digits. Other than that the only other carrier I could think that is due a widebody order is MX, but they wouldn't need double digits to beign with. So my vote is for QR or VS (more QR though).

DJ more than likely will not go International, however it is likely that the Virgin Group will form a larger airline out of the Pacific Blue group which could go international. This has been a running topic for a long time now and AFAIK nothing more has come of it then talk.

Whilst I believe it is not DJ that will go international but a seperate group within Virgin, I do not think they will have the capital to purchase more than $1bil US in aircraft. Its simply not feasible.

I think I would have to agree that it is from a large A340 operator. Possibilities could be VS, TG, LH or EK. They are the safest bet.

Not really. QR announced the intention to acquire up to 20 777s last year. If Airbus has been able to persuade them to drop that idea and take a comparable number of A346s instead I'd say that was quite newsworthy.

Wait, would Boeing hold slots for an airline on a verbal agreement? I believe Boeing had held slots for QR which ended up being QF's when they made that huge 787 order. If that was the case, QR must have paid deposits to Boeing for those slots, right? I guess my question is, could that have been based on a verbal agreement?? Sounds risky for Boeing.

Here's an exact quote from the story in FI: http://www.flightglobal.com/Articles...atar+reopens+widebody+contest.html

Quote:
We did not have a letter of intent with Boeing [for the 777], although we were very close to it. Now there is the competition between the two. Both Airbus and Boeing are able to deliver these aircraft in the timeframe we want – by the end of next year,” says Al Baker.

believe Boeing had held slots for QR which ended up being QF's when they made that huge 787 order.

Yes. Those were refundable deposits.

Etihad has been taking delivery of their 773ERs over the last couple of months. Highly unlikely that the A340s are for them.

Doesn't Etihad have 4 x A345 and 4 x A346HGW on order (+ 4 x A380 and 12 x A332)?

Yes, Etihad has 8 A340s on order. I think they only bought those T7s because they could get them earlier. No ruled out that they'll buy more A340s if the HGW version does well.

I would expect Airbus to mention that the order is for a new customer if it is goiing to be an airline which has not already ordered the A346.
