Japan Asia Airlines And Other Carriers

Fri Mar 10, 2006 7:19 am

Hello Everyone,
I've been wondering why JAL, Air France, KLM and BA for a while have airplanes entitled Japan Asia Airlines, Air France Asie, KLM Asia and British Asia Airways. We're these separate companies from their parent airlines? Or was it a requirement to fly into a specific nation?

this has been discussed extensively before, in a nutshell, carriers from certain countries who wanted to fly to mainland China were told by the Chinese to stop flying to Taiwan. So many started up subsidiaries to fly to Taiwan. Except for those nations who had the guts to tell Beijing to get lost and not put up with this political blackmail, like the US, Singapore, Thailand, Phillipines, Indonesia.

Add South Korea and Malaysia. Japan is a lone exception in Asia.
Canada: Didn't AC or CP serve TPE before.

Hello Trex8: Philippines is spelled with a single "L" and double "PP". Philippines was named after King Philip (Rey Felipe) of Spain after it was discovered in 1521 by explorer Ferdinand Magellan (Fernando Magallanes). At that time, the islands were called Islas Filipinas (Philippine Islands). Incidentally, there were airlines in the past bearing Filipinas in their fuselage: 1) Filipinas Orient Airways (IATA code: FE) that flew Caravelle jets, YS-11 and DC3s and 2) Aero Filipinas that flew charters MNL-HKG and Laoag-HKG using 707-320C-----can anybody tell me IATA code of Aero Filipinas?? Anybody has pictures???

Hello Carpethead: Yes, it was CP that served TPE before using 744.

Interestingly, QF subsidiary Australia Asia Airlines (IATA Code: IM) served TPE but this airline was short-lived----can anybody post a pic of Australia Asia Airlines 747SP in this thread?? Thanks!!

Also Lufthansa flew to TPE incognito using a Condor Flugdienst 747-400 but in full LH flight numbe

Quoting Carpethead (Reply 2):
Add South Korea

Koreans couldn't fly for almost a decade to Taiwan after their changing political recognition to the PRC in the early 90s because they caved into every demand Beijing had. Never mind needing to start an airline with a different name! I forgot about MH, thanks for reminding us.

You mean Korean carriers couldnt fly. If I remember correctly TG was operating BKK-TPE-SEL/ICN or CX on HKG-TPE-SEL/ICN. I know one of them was operating. But if I remember Koreans could travel on the Korea-Taiwan sector too!

TG, CX and I believe NW could fly but no Taiwanese or Korean airlines could fly between the 2 places till 2 years or so ago! the Taiwanese got real upset with the way Seoul ditched them.

Yeah but Koreans were not restricted from flying the other carriers to Taiwan. Anyway the Taiwanese were upset of course when you have the world turning their back on you politcally. Besides Korea benefited from opening ties with the PRC with the establisment of several routes which are quite profitable with KE and OZ. Though like you said there are now direct flights with Korean and Taiwanese carriers on the Korea-Taiwan routings now -- so looks like they aint upset no more.
