LHR To Stansted Airport Transfer

Sat Mar 11, 2006 3:42 am

I have booked a flight to Rome from SFO for my Family of four, and it seems that I can save a lot of money by transferring from UA arriving at LHR to Ryanair at Stansted.

The question I have, since neither my daughter or wife know how to travel light (I expect 22 KG suitcases for both + 10 KG carry on --- and I don't dare say a word if I value my marriage) what is the best way to transit between airports. The UA arrives at 7:10 Am and RyanAir departs 12:40PM, I assume subway travel might be rude to carry on that much luggage with commuters in route to work, also maybe thats more luggage than airport shuttle would like or more than Taxi can take. Is the best bet private Limo or airport Bus? With the amount of money I save from transfer the Private Limo cost would not be a problem I think.

National Express runs a coach every hour between Heathrow and Stansted, with a journey time of approxiamately 90 minutes. Services are less frequent in the evenings, early mornings and throughout the night. Return fares start from £26.

You should be OK, as you have allowed 4 hours for the transit but remember FR is a point to point carrier and if you fail to make it to their checkin by 12.00 midday, you forfeit your fare and don't even think of asking for a refund!

The National Express Coach would probably be the best, otherwise you will have to transit London using either the Heathrow Express to Paddington, underground or taxi from Paddington to Liverpool Street, and then the Stansted Express, see http://www.baa.com and click on Stansted and then "To and from our airport". Not recommended if you have heavy luggage and a nagging wife and screaming kids in tow!

A taxi or limousine would cost a fortune and outweigh any saving on your fare from STN.
Do not worry about being "rude" to commuters who might give you funny looks when they see you will all your luggage. It's your train as much as theirs!

Thanks RAFVC10 and BCAL!! I just went to the National Express website and bought the tickets on line. So now I'm off to do the "typical American European vacation", where we visit, Rome, Paris and London for 5 days each and pretend we've seen all of Europe. Tips like this on A.net have been real helpful (the main reason I decided to cough up the money and become member! ) I work with an Italian, a French Woman, and a British Man, and they all agree I will not be seeing the "real Italy", the "real France" or the "real UK", but I guess its better than the EPCOT center!

Actually, people ride the Tube with that much luggage all the time. The National Express, which you booked, is definately an easy option. I do think you might be able to save a little time by using Heathrow Express to Paddington, the tube to Liverpool St. and Stansted Express from there. No traffic worries either. Still, you should be fine with the bus.

Watch out for the excess baggage charges on FR. They only allow a 15kg bag per person and no pooling of allowances is permitted. So if you have two 22kg bags for example you will face an excess baggage charge of €112! Caveat emptor.

Don't forget the 1.5hr tube journey from Rome ciampino to the city centre.
I found the tubes absolutely manic, getting busier the further you go into Rome. You may miss Rush hour tho!

A pleasure SJCRRPAX. Maybe when we need advice/recommendations when we visit the States, you can return the favour.

Shame that you are rushing Europe - typical American "If it's Monday, it must be France, Tuesday it's Rome and Wenesday it's home. Must find a McDonalds!"

As opposed to the British "Oh it cost me 50p to do X instead of £1 to do Y so I will not do either, save the money and moan how expensive everything is after spending £500 to get there"
