Good for Ilyushin, but where is Cubana getting the cash to pay for these airplanes?

From the article:

"To finance the deal, Cuba has paid 15% of the total sum up front, the rest coming from a 10-year loan from Russian banks."

They get the cash from their oil exports. With the current price of crude oil beating records, oil gives you lots of money to buy planes.

Sounds like Uncle Hugo is giving Uncle Fidel a little spending cash. I don't recall Cuba having major oil exports...

Maybe one day when Cuba opens up to Americans I might get a chance to fly one of these Russian beauties.

Cuba gets discounted oil from Venezuela as part of the San Jose Energy Cooperation Agreement which is enough to cover Cuba's demands, but in addition to that agreement, Chavez sends a couple extra oil tankers a month to Cuba to pay the island for the couple hundred Cuban doctors that work in Venezuela (which are paid a salary also by the Venezuelan govt.).

Cuba re-exports this extra oil and earns huge profits. It's the greatest deal of the century for Cuba!

As long (and hopefully for actually a very short time, don't forget he is elderly) as Castro is in power, he needs a long distance aircraft. He obiously cannot by Boeing or even Airbus (due to USA embargos) so what other kind of a/c can he buy? Yes, he is like any other despot who rapes financially his terribly poor and opressed citizens, living very well above the rest of society.

I'm surprised that no one noticed the link to airliners.net on the BBC website. In the top right hand corner, under Related Internet Links, there is a link to 'Aviation Photos Il-96-300,' which leads directly to airliners.net pictures of Il-96s.

Let's go back to the thread.

This Il-96 looks impressive. I wonder if Castro will have the best presidential airplane in Latin America. As far as I know, Mexican President flies a 757 and Chavez (Venezuela) an A319. I believe that the Argentinean plane (Tango 1) is a 757, but I'm not sure.

What about other countries in South America? Any idea?
