Name F9's Newest Tail

Sun Mar 12, 2006 5:17 am

As Mariner posted in another thread, Frontier added aircraft #944 to its fleet this week. Frontier's advertising is asking employees to name the polar bear mother and her 1½-year-old cub on the tail. Sticky Grey (Frontier's advertising agency) will select the name and possibly use it to create characters for upcoming commercials and other advertising materials.

Any good ideas for names?

Frontier did not have to pick the names of these two cubs. Klondike and Snow were born in 1994 at the Denver zoo. They are my favorite, and are currently gracing the front of Frontier's ticket jackets.

Are they renaming Klondike & Snow?

Polar bears are also termed glacier bears. I choose "Glacier" & "Alaska" They are also native to Antarctica so "Antarctica" would be a third choice.  cold

In addition to being directly relevant, those names are cute and catchy! And make you imagine a clock as you await your flight.

Don't mean to get nit-picky, but glacier bears are black bears with a bluish grey coat and live in southeast Alaska, northeast BC, and the southwest Yukon. This coloration developed during the last ice age when the glacier bear ancestors were isolated around the glaciers. The color is becoming more rare as the glacier bear population is becoming more spread out and is breeding with other, more dominant colors of black bears.

Can you tell I worked in an Alaska museum for three years?

Anyways, back to the topic, I always think polar bears should be named Bobo or Binky (Anchoragites should get that last name).

Maybe I'm not watching enough Discovery Channel or Animal Planet, but I didn't think that there were ANY bears in Antarctica. confused

I stand corrected. I did find something which stated PB do not live in the southern hemisphere. They are indigenous to the arctic. My bad. I seem to recall reading a Readers Digest or National Geographic article, several years ago which lead me to believe there was a PB problem near McMurdo Station Antarctica. I guess I got my critters mixed up. Scratch Anarctica.

This may be sensitive: It hurts me to watch them club baby seals. They are very innocent creatures. Can F9 have a baby seal on one of their tails and "protest" the slaughter of baby seals? Robert NWDC10

F9 has a unique tail for each aircraft in its fleet, including the CRJ-700s flown by QX as part of a codeshare. The original 732 and 733 aircraft had two animals per tail (one on each side) to help make the airline look a little bigger than it was. However, all these aircraft have since been retired from F9's fleet. The A-319 and A-318s all have the same animal on their tails and winglets.

You aren't the only one, Mariner. When I got the drawing and the JPEG, they both said "Adult Klondike and Snow". I thought they were Klondike and snow, but they are a mother and cub combo. OOPS! I like TIMEAIR's suggestion.

Name the mother "Piper" and her cub, "Cub" so you will have a Piper Cub airplane. But if you want to avoid trademark infringement lawsuits, I suggest Snow and Flake.

I don't know why, but I think the Mom's name should be Alice. I haven't decided about her cub, yet...but I'm sure I'll think of something to submit on the employee site before the deadline in up.

On a related topic, as much as I love our tails, enough with the bears and the birds and animals that grow antlers!  Wink  duck  Let's get something a little more fierce going, such as this suggestion recently emailed to me by a fellow Frontier crew member:

...yes??? no??? After all, like our Orca, the Great White Shark can indeed be found in the oceans off North America, among other places.

Regards,

NZblue

How about Kaya and Chena

Kaya means "stay and don't go back" and Chena is a river in Alaska

Or...

Siku and Sesi for ice and snow

Or...

Chena and Deshka- both are Alaskan rivers.
