Any Chance Of 3-class Seating Coming Back On DL?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 2:29 pm

I know this is a longshot...but with DL's new longhaul product competing with PS, do you think that eventually they might bring back 3-class seating; both on transcon and int'l routes? Or is the 2-class config here to stay?

It might be here to say, depending on how DL's position changes. I'm praying for the same thing on CO myself.

Isn't CO's BusinessFirst supposed to be almost as good as int'l F class? Either way, I wonder what the "improved" BE will be like. It would be nice if they used CO's 2-1-2 config on the 764s...18.5" wide really isn't enough for an 8 hour flight. I mean the domestic F seats on the MD-88s are wider!

No.

Yes.

Right now with the SOng to DL fleet change unless some major extra ordinary demand arsies for the three class config. I doubt they are going to spent anymore on recongifing planes

Actually I do see the possibility of three classes, but the new class wouldn't be a resurection of first class but rather a form of premium economy. The gap between BusinessElite and economy is huge in terms of comfort AND cost. Many people want a more comfortable seat that is a bit more spacious, but don't feel the need to be served a four course meal with champagne that costs the airline over $50.

The gap between economy and business class is just getting so huge. Business class is now where first class was ten to fifteen years ago. With these incredible improvements in the highly competitive premium cabins, the person that can't afford to more than a 50-100% premium over economy has nothing catering to them on most airlines. BA and VS have a premium economy, and United offers economy plus which has enhanced room. I personally see more airlines that have abandoned first class and are offering a hybrid of traditional business class and first class needing something to cater to the market of those that want a little bit of comfort but can't afford to spend thousands upon thousands. In ten years I would expect Delta and many other airlines to offer some form of premium economy.

Not really. Continental's BusinessFirst isn't bad, but it still has 55 inches of pitch with a classic style seat with good recline. It isn't anywhere near up to the standard of Club World or Virgin Upper Class which are both fully flat business class seats.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

No to both.

I do not know what the new BE seats will be like but one can only hope they will be lie-flat (or nearly lie-flat) and in a 2x1x2 configuration on the 76's.

Kind of ironic...the opposite is happening on domestic flights (F is what Y used to be 10-15 yrs. ago)
