Where Is This 747 Now?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 5:50 pm

In 1977 I flew JNB-LHR on British Airways to attend my grandfather's funeral. The aircraft we flew on was a 747, the first one with RR RB211 engines. There was also a little plaque on the bulkhead commemorating the fact that this aircraft held the record for the highest weight takeoff of a commercial airliner at the time.

I know we have some history buffs on here so here are the questions:
What was the registration?
What happened to the aircraft after British Airways?
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I think it was B747-236B G-BDXA c/n 21238/292.
This was the first RR powered 747 for BA. Delivered in 1977 and served its entire live with BA. Sadly, it is scrapped at Marana late 2003.

Hope this helps,

Ivo

There are only 3 RR powered 747 delivered in 1977:

1: The one mentioned above
2: G-BDXB 21239/302 from 2 nov 1999 Nigeria AW; 3 aug 2000 back BA.
Stored for the moment.
3: G-BDXC 21240/305 from 8 feb 2002 European Aircharter.
Scrapped at Cardiff 18 aug 2002.

G-BDXD was delivered in 1978.

I forgot something.

If you can remember the name of the aircraft?

G-BDXA "City of Cardiff"
G-BDXB "City of Liverpool"
G-BDXC "City of Manchester"
