Delta Shuttle MD-80's

Does anyone know if Delta's switch of equipment from the 737 to MD-80 on the Delta Shuttle from Reagan National to LGA is permanent or just temporary?

I read in Airways magazine that they are switching all shuttle flights between BOS, LAG, and Regan national from 733 to MD-88's from last November through this summer. Not sure if its temporary though.

With some of their 733s being returned to lessors and others being retired, the MD-88s on the Shuttle will probably be a semi-permanent move (at least until they retire them) unless the loads on the Shuttle routes warrant the return of more of the Shuttle configured 738s.

It's permanent. The 737-300s were returned.

The 733s are leaving the fleet and the 738s are too big, so the only logical choice in the Delta fleet left is the M80s

Not in the immediate future but the concept does exist as a possibility in the distant future.

I think the MD-80s are a good choice for the time being--their 3x2 configuration means fewer middle seats, and their rear airstairs make it easier to deplane from the rear without having to roll up a set of stairs. Both features are popular with business travelers.

However, should loads and/or yields decrease in the future, I would think that DL Connection E170s would also work well.

A bit unrelated, do you think DL will ever upgrade their BOS-JFK flights? They are currently operated by Comair but to me it would seem that the route would warrant a bigger plane as many people connect to DL flights from JFK.

Possible, but I think the RJ's are the right size/frequency for the route at this time.

Absolutely. Here is a prime example of Delta looking at their primary customers first before making the decisions, and making a good business decision at that.. Pity that BD over here in the UK can't do the same. Come on Delta, I love you guys, and you have my full support through these hard times!

Its permanent, as all Delta Shuttle 733's have been retired. Model nbrs' 737-3L9.

As of today, there are only 8 733's in DL colors left, 737-347 models. All other models, 3B7, 35B, 3L9, and 330's are retired.

Glad I was able to fly on one last one in October before they are totally gone.

DL Shuttle also used the 727's before the 737's . These too offered rear airstairs. I remember that they had all leather seats in blue . DL brought one to ROC for the airshow a few years ago.

As for the 738s, they are far too capable for 250 mile runs. DL is adding in-seat video to about half of them so they can be used on the new Song style of DL mainline service on flights over 1700 miles.

Pan Am always said that McDonnell Douglas narrowbodies should never be used on the Shuttle because passengers preferred the wider cabin of Boeings. I guess PA was wrong. Eastern used DC9s, IIRC. DL's MD80s do have the large overhead bins which does help.

From what I heard and maybe someone in TechOps can confirm, is that all 738s will eventually be retrofitted with PTVs. Immediate plans call for about half as you said, but long-term all will feature them...

Did EA ever use the DC-8 on the shuttle run ? I was watching 'The French Connection' and i swear they took a EA DC-8 shuttle.

When DL has only 75-80 738s, they are too capable in comparison to the other uses DL has for those aircraft. The comparison is with the missions the planes could fly more than its ability to do 250 mile hops. The 738 should be used to develop DL's longhaul transcon and near transcon routes.

From what I have read. EA never used DC-8's on the shuttle. but EA did use A-300's on the LGA-BOS leg of it. Only on that route cause they are not able to fly into DCA.

I don't think DC-8s were operated at LGA by anyone due to the short runways. The 727 was developed with those runways in mind, however, and as noted above was the workhorse of both the Eastern (later Trump and then USAir) and Pan Am (later Delta) Shuttles for many years.

At one point Eastern also used A300s on the Shuttle to Boston...and these days we think 737-800s are too big for the route!

One day many, many, many years ago I rode the Eastern shuttle from Newark to Boston - 3rd section and it was an Electra with the new blue stripes. Only six on board. My best friend's first plane ride. Flew through a horrendous thunderstorm. A Navy sailor sitting in the back ran to the front lavatory in very bad turbulence and lightning. He threw up on the whole run to the front before the flight attendant ordered him to sit down.

How's that for an ancient Eastern Air Shuttle story? The Electra was a great airplane!!

BOS-JFK saw some AB3's from time to time to connect with the European bank. BOS-LGA was all 72S from what I can recall.

Don't think that's the issue. They need the 738s to fly near-transcon roues which they are more than capable of doing. However, the same thing can't be said about the M80s.
