Delta Fare Letter Classes L, U, T, H, Q, K, Etc.

Mon Mar 13, 2006 6:09 am

What does each one of them exactly mean?

The Delta website says this:
L, U, T, H, Q, K - Lowest Fares
B, M - Discounted
Y - Flexible
P, F, A, C, D, J, I - First/Business

What does each one mean INDIVDUALLY? I do believe that L, U, and T are the cheapest, but I do not know which is cheapest out of those three. I do also know that F and A are first class, while D and J are Business. There is also another that is not listed, N. N is Coach fares purchased with SkyMiles. Are there any others?

L, U, T in that order, higest to lowest. Generally speaking T is the lowest in almost all cases.

N = SM coack
R = SM first
O = SM BizE
G = SM upgrade, 1st
Z = SM upgrade, BizE

Usually differences in regards to refunds, changes, etc. I used to have a good link on delta.com that explained them somewhat. Let me dig around and see if I can find it again.

Edit: This was the link but it is now broken.

hehe, as a Gold Medallion on Delta, I usually TRY my hardest to book the "T" fare class on my coast to coast flights. They are the cheapest. Sometimes if I have to, I'll book an L class for $30 more if T fares runs out. Lately on delta.com, I've been seeing so many H, K, M, and Y class but now which my flexible weekends, now i'm seeing alot of good T class prices.

Well, quite simply, what fare basis you have. And, just to be clear, all airlines do this, not just DL.

Gone are the days of coach, discounted coach, and first class as the only fare types. These others are simply a placement of the scale from T (lowest side of coach) to Y (highest side of coach).

The pricing models at Delta.com and most mechanisms that resell tickets also have to select among the available inventory. Including Simplifares, which, opened up the inventory of some of the lower fares - keep in mind, no fare types went away, and the high ends were capped. Now, capped higher, and whatever.

So, within the available inventory of ALL seats on a possible sale- including any relevant connections, the 'default' on Delta.com and most resell mechanisms is to find the lowest available fare class for the flight. BUT, there may not be any (an indicator of very little seats available) in the lowest (T) fare class, and it goes up from there, stopping at Y. Rolling over to F/J/I/D/A/P/C if applicable.

Don't think too much about this. You are really wasting your time.

I don't think DL offers any "P" designated fares anymore. I know it indicates they do on parts of their site, but it indicates that they don't on others. Either way isn't "P" only used in 3-class configs?

What about on flights with Delta's codeshare partners?

I would think that C would show up there possibly. But, like I said, I've never seen P or C. Heck, maybe someone with a lot of free time can try to find one!

C exists, as do D, I & J. Those fare classes that DL shows are only for DL operated flights, not their partners.

Well, not mostly in change fees, but if you were to be charged the price difference to change the ticket, it can be quite the sum if you are going from let's say a T fare to a H or something.

Delta at one point also had limited the number of MQMs or Medallion Qualifying miles that can be earned on T fares, but soon abandoned the idea after stiff resistance from Medallion members.

Also, some of the lower fares such as T, L and Q are not eligible for 'buying' an upgrade to First class at the gate for $50-75 or whatever it is.

cheers

Oh yeah, I had once a T fared ticket end up being more expensive than a full Y with last minute changes!

Actually it's L, U & T. Q is eligible for upgrades at the gate.

Can't find one right now on a DL operated flights. Found a few on some codeshares with AF.

So I guess this confirms that P is gone? Additionally, I don't think they sell any first class seats even on their int'l codeshares which have 3 classes.

There are also instances where a flight number that originates in one of those markets but continues on past the gateway into the US will have C on the domestic portion.
