SAA Seat Pitch Question

Mon Mar 13, 2006 10:05 am

Hello everyone,
Has anyone flown on SAA long haul lately? I know that in the past the seat pitch in Y class on their 340's has been a tight 31 inches but there have been claims that they are improving it to a liveable 34 inches.

I am booked on a flight soon and the FLL Res Centre was unable to give any info on pitch, the lady I spoke to had no clue.

The flysaa.com website has a rep for not being up to date either so not sure I should go with that as accurate info, the seat maps do not indicate pitch.

Just wondering if anyones flown them intercon lately.
Thanks to all!
Cheers
Alek

RE: SAA Seat Pitch Question

My last conversation with SA Sales left me with the impression that the A346 retrofit had been completed. All A346 aircraft out of ATL are now supposed to have 34" pitch in economy. I don't know about the A340 aircraft out of JFK. The B744 service from IAD remains unchanged at 34".

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

The A346's and A343's have now been reconfigured with the revised seat pitch in Y-class. The A346's are now 42J+275Y and the A343's are now 38J+215Y. Out of interest, the A342's will soon change from 42J+194Y to 24J+226Y. (with the new lie flat J-class seats)

The seat maps in the current SAA printed timetable show the Y-class seat pitch as follows:

A343 - 31/32"
A343 - 33/34"
A346 - 33/34"
B744 - 31/32" (main deck)
33/34/35" (upper deck)

A343 - 31/32"
A343 - 33/34"
A346 - 33/34"
B744 - 31/32" (main deck)
33/34/35" (upper deck)

Guess the first A340 should be a A340-200

Thanks guys!
Good thing I asked,
The flysaa.com website is out of date then.
The seatmap of the 346 indicates 42J and 293Y, that means that SAA took out 18 seats from Y.

Correct. More space in Y with less seats on the 346.

Oops! Yes that first one is indeed the pitch for the A342. (Damn cut and paste!) I'll see if I can edit that post...

Considering that they announced the Star Alliance 346 on March 15 and it was first mentioned here on 27 January, saying that the website is out of date is a fair assumption!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

they are on the way to get equiped with flat beds in premium class. ZRH will have flat bed flights beyond 08 april 06, paris will have some flights only by mid of june and all flights into CDG will have flat bed end of july as well. not sure about BOM, PER and other stations the 342 is used.

I just flew on an SAA A346 from JNB to FRA in J class and thought it was great. I actually managed to sleep for about 6-7 hours (usually I have a real hard time sleeping on planes).

I also flew on the A346 flight from CPT to JNB in economy and thought it was great (though I would have liked another two inches of room for long haul flights). Loved the nice big PTV screens they have in economy and the food is great as well.

Loved flying SAA and can't wait to do so again in the future. veryhappy
