Ncaa Tournament Charters

Mon Mar 13, 2006 1:20 pm

With the men's brackets now announced (and the women's tournament selection Monday night) I figure the charters should start tomorrow (the play-in game participants) and continue Tuesday and Wednesday. Post any info you know about here.

CO usually flys Longhorn teams out of AUS.

The Longhorn football team took a 764 to the Rose Bowl.

They're playing just up the road here in Dallas, though. I'd expect them to just be bussed up. For the Big 12 Conference Championship, we had 2 Skywest CRJs, a Skyway 328Jet, a Chautauqua ERJ or two. Don't remember the other planes that came in. DAL will have a good amount of charters on Wednesday and Thursday with teams and supporters flying in. Won't know the info until they are in the air, though.

I would suspect most teams will be taking RJ's or smaller narrowbody aircraft. The final 4 teams might end up with a 737 or 752 to Indy because of the extra media/family/friends.

The NCAA does all the chartering for the teams and picks up the expense. The logistics is done by a small travel agency near MSN (or at least central Wisconsin somewhere) I believe. There was a nifty Wall Street Journal article about the agency last year at this time. some teams are chartered, some take the bus and others go commercial. You lose, you go home commercial, usually...unless the school wants to pay the whole way.

Also depends on the range too.

SIU went to Oklahoma City and we got a 737 going and an AA MD82 coming back home.

If memory serves, our friend GroundStop saved the day with an NCAA Women's team last year when something happened to their DL flight. FL got the preponderance of the team there. In that discussion, there was some explanation of how the whole NCAA thing works, and how FL got praise from the NCAA for going above and beyond, IIRC.

Flight Options is bringing an ERJ 135 into DAL, arrival at 0850, coming in from MCC (Sacramento) bringing in Cal supporters.
