ORD Gets Rocked On 3/12/06...Diversions To MKE

Mon Mar 13, 2006 9:21 pm

Last night a huge line of storms rolled through the midwest, and ORD felts it effects. I was called in to work a diversion from MLI, and as I cam on the ramp I saw a few visitors. Here in MKE we received the following diversions. 1 UA A319, 1 UA A320, 1 Ted A320, 1 HP A320, 1 Kalitta 747-200, one FL 717-200, 1 AE EMB 145, and a couple Skywest CRJ'.

I saw the UA A320 as well as Ted taxi out (after 3 hours on the ground) to take off, and shortly thereafter I saw them come back to the ramp. When I left bot planes were parked at NW gates on the E concourse. Needless to say it was one hell of a storm last night. Did anyone else get any good diversions?

UA 855 from LAX, scheduled to arrive around 8pm at ORD, with a different-aircraft continuation of the same flight number, to EZE at 9:27pm, had a double diversion and subsequent cancellation.

First diversion was to DSM, then to IND.

Well it may be starting again. ORD is on a groundstop as of right now. Ted is parked on the de-icing pad across from E-60, and another UA A320 from last night is over on the West ramp.

You got to see the Asiana 744, and the NW 742 last week.

There have been some massive thunderstorms in recent days. It seems like we are constantly under a tornado watch, severe thunderstorm watch, flood watch or whatever else. It has also been unseasonably warm. It is still winter, yet the temperatures are in the upper 60s. This is causing huge thunderstorms to form in the Indiana/Illinois/Missouri/Kentucky/Ohio areas among others.

The result is bad news for aviation. Not only are there strong winds and turbulence but there will be plenty of diversions.

Climatologically speaking, "spring" begins March 1. While it is above normal now temp wise, severe weather this time of year is to be expected. Like I said in an earlier thread, 'Tis the season.

Expect the diversions further East today, some east coast airports already have Fog/Below Mins diversions that have been going on since last night. These include ABE, MDT, and briefly PHL for any Cat I only planes/crews.

Later today, the real fun begins.  Smile  raincloud

I didn't see the Asiana cause I didn't know it was there, saw it was there when I went to flight aware that night and saw it left MKE at 8:30pm..I was in the ramp room. grrr..but the NWA 742 was sweet to see.

All of the ORD-bound US planes out of CLT sat on the ground for about 3 hours last night. They finally went, and got put into holds over Ohio. Of course the final limiting factor was fuel and crew duty times. So, everybody wound up in PIT at about 0230 est.

Is weather like this unusual for March? No. It's just that the past few years, Chicago has gotten a mid-March snow storm with 4 to 8 inches of the white stuff.

Just because Chicago gets 80 deg.F and tornados in March doesn't mean that it can't still get 20 deg.F and 10" of snow in April of the same year!

Here in Kenosha, I was listening to it all... Tornado warnings in Walworth County, Watches in Racine/Kenosha... My friend called me at 12:58AM telling me that the flight he was working diverted to Indianapolis due to ORD closing... It was a real mess last night... Still pretty windy today.

Chicago weather is very unpredictable and seasonally inconsistent. Having blizzards in march isn't unheard of, and neitherr is 60 degree weather.

It was a pretty mild winter for Chicago, so you never know.

Well technically spring starts when the sun passed directly over the equator which will occur on March 20th this year, so it is still winter. However late in winter crazy things can happen. Highs today in Illinois were in the 60s and it was sunny yet it is forcast to snow in two days and it was snowing just last week in ORD causing some operational delays.

Weather in ORD is never good for aviation. It is either snowy/icy in the winter affecting operations or there are thunderstorms and severe weather in the summer which causes ground stops and can close the ramp down.

I left to work today at about 1300 and the crew was just being driven to the hardstand to get onto that airplane. I'm sure it left shortly thereafter.

Due to WEATHER/WIND, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving Chicago OHare International Airport, Chicago, IL (ORD). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 3 hours and 21 minutes. To see if you may be affected, select your departure airport and check "Delays by Destination".
Delays by Destination:

* Due to WEATHER/LOCIGS, departure traffic destined to Newark International Airport, Newark, NJ (EWR) is currently experiencing delays averaging 55 minutes.
* Due to WEATHER/LOCIGS, departure traffic destined to La Guardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA) is currently experiencing delays averaging 2 hours and 15 minutes.
* Due to WX: LOW CEILINGS/VIS, departure traffic destined to CYYZ airport will not be allowed to depart until at or after 00:29 UTC.

Interestingly enough CLE and YYZ are both in ground stop right now. This is the tail end of a storm that affected ORD yesterday and this morning.

This I know, obviously, I'm just saying a severe/tornadic thunderstorm in Mid-March isn't as odd as it would seem. Now those hailstorms @ PHL in January, that stuff was just messed up.  crazy

I wish I could. Those huge thunderstorms are loud and difficult. It doesn't help that I don't live within hearing distance of a tornado siren either and what is even worse is that there was a tornado that passed within 1/2 mile of my apartment just last month and I had no warning as it destroyed the Flight Service station just a mile away. Now that is terrifying.

Ever since I moved to the midwest, I have jhad a profound respect for the weather and can totally understand it causing havoc at a busy airport like Chicago.

Looks like ATL will be getting hit hard later this evening. Just watched the weather channel and the storms are coming.

I can remember about a year or maybe two ago when ATL gets hit hard, AGS gets a ton of diversions. I was outside one evening and saw what I thought was a Frontier Airbus. A couple minutes later I saw the huge DL 767. I ran and got my scanner, wife and kids and raced to the airport. We sat along the fence at AGS for about an hour or so and watched plane after plane land. A319, 717, several DL 767 and MD80's. Very, very unusual for AGS. I loved it. When spring and summer rolls around the weather in Georgia gets ugly, so I keep an eye on incoming diversions. I watch ATCmonitor daily and hope for the best!!

Nope, the mainline alternates last night were FAR and IND for the EWR and IAH flights, and the express flights never got off the ground, two of which in cleveland, both did ramp returns at the same time (i think around 955ish), and the one IAH-ORD express flight was held at the gate. Its a good thing too because all of the RONs last night came in on top of each other right when the storms started to hit MKE, so we would have had no place to put them.

Any word on what diversions IND received?

From Indianapolis station WTHR website:

http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=4621343

Storms strand travelers at Indianapolis Airport

Kris Kirschner/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis, March 13 - At Indianapolis International Airport it was easy to get emotional for hundreds of travelers Monday morning.

Catherine from Rhode Island says she's stranded. "We have nothing; we have no hotel, no car rental, nothing."

The feeling was frustration.

Jan Wangaard from Chicago says she's "discouraged and I want to go home!"

Severe storms prevented dozens of flights from reaching Chicago airports. Lak Shmi was on one of those flights. "So we circled and circled, we landed in Des Moines, actually, refueled and flew back to Chicago, circled some more and landed here."

Wangaard says she has "been on the plane 12 hours."

Hundreds of passengers found themselves diverted to and stranded at the Indianapolis Airport looking for another way home and someone to blame.

One passenger believes "United people made stupid decisions, even letting us go to Chicago in the first place, end of story."

Shmi says, "It seems Chicago is a disaster in general. I flew out last weekend and the radar failed."

Terry Burns with the Airport Authority says it's tough to get rooms right now "because of the Big Ten, hotels are booked."

Complicating matters even more, this is the start of the busy spring break travel season, so booking alternate flights may be a challenge.

United passengers were told "We're going to get you vouchers for breakfast and lunch, hotel rooms are arranged at the Adam's Mark, Holiday Inn, Sleep Inn or Comfort Inn."

It's some comfort for weary travelers hoping for direction that leads them home if they can weather this emotional storm.

Most of the flights were from United. A spokesman for the airline says they had to divert a total of 26 flights to area airports, including Indianapolis.

He said the crew and employees did all they could to make passengers more comfortable and get them home.

More delays are likely Monday because of the stormy weather in the Midwest and on the East Coast.

All I have to say is thank god we don't fly for UA anymore on a day like this. I will take PHL over ORD anyday from a dispatch standpoint.
