EK Upgrades IST To 773

Tue Mar 14, 2006 12:15 am

According to Turkish Newspaper Hurriyet, EK upgraded DXB-IST from A 330 to 773(from 278 pax to 427 pax) According to the article after having flown the route with 99% load factor for months the airline decided to upgrade the route. The article doesn't specifically say if this is current or will be soon, so If anyone can clarify that I would appreciate it.
I know DXB became a very hot vacation spot for the Turks and all, but I think the success of the route is also due to connecting pax to Australia and Africa
Here is the article(In turkish only)

Wow- that's a lot of plane!
They occasionally op 773s into Beirut during peak summer days too.
Nice to see that IST can sustain it

Is there a visa requirement for Turkish citizens in DXB?
If not, it will make sense to go shopping there instead of Europe.
I agree with the Australia and Africa connecting pax. When I was looking for a IST-JNB ticket last January, the EK site had the cheapest fare but with a 35 hour layover in DXB on one of the legs.

Yes, UAE requires visa from Turkish citizens. It is rather easy to get. We just need to fax copies of our passport and pay the fee.

I think EK would do much better if they added a second daily A330 to the existing one in favour of better connections. They could then offer much better connections and receive more requests..

I know but the destination has become very popular with Turkish PAX and is offering vacation options for both luxury and average customer.

I agree! But I think They are going 773 year round from now on. I don't know if this will get TK's attention, the more planes EK get the more pax they can carry beyond DXB out of IST.

Keep in mind that Beirut's frequency is twice daily (except Monday in which there is only one flight).

I was in Emirates istanbul town office last summer and staff there knew about it already back then but they said it was mainly due to lack of slots in Ataturk airport and the demand for cargo which made them upgrade the aircraft rather than get a second daily flight.

Firiko,
you hit the nail in the head. IST is becoming a very hard place to get into because of the slot issues. So, a single big airliner is an answer.

Also, I think THY started to run the market with frequent equipment swaps for A330 instead of a usual 738.

When I was in Istanbul last week I saw an EK B773 approach IST. I assume this was a last minute equipment substitute. Here is a poor quality picture I took of it near Ataturk Bulvari:

That seems like a waste given the 77W's range, unless this is a proving run.

Anyone know how many have been delivered to EK thus far?

If I remember correctly the UAE-Turkey bilateral has frequency limitations. While Dubai maintains an open skies policy, I'm not sure there are additional frequencies available for Emirates under the larger UAE bilateral.
Also keep in mind Emirates operates to Istanbul A310 & B747 cargo flights in addition to its passenger service, which eat into the allocation.

Might be a waste range wise, however needed capacity wise.

Thanks for the info. I was on holidays last week in IST and i swore i saw an EK 773 fly over the city, but couldnt be sure. The night that my mom and I flew out, our plane was sitting next to an EK 343. Seems they are making use of all a/c on this route.

SQ operates 4 times per week DXB > IST 777-300 with full 5th freedom rights.
TK flies daily 737-800 (sometimes A310-300).

They must be making good money if they have 427 pax on board.

Orlando 666:

I flew on SQ to Bangkok via Singapore and also way back to Istanbul from Singapore.
In Singapore I tried to make my check-in from an SQ office before 3 days to my flight but I couldn't able to find an empty window seat. I am told that because of high demand on DXB - IST leg, they couldn't have helped me.

Also I saw on the DXB stop, may be half of the pax are replaced with the new ones from UAE.

I guess in near future TK may begin DXB flights by 330s.

I wish EK started a new DXB-IST flight arriving at about 6am, or 12noon at the very latest. Just have to wait a bit, because I'm pretty confident that in the medium-term, IST will go double daily.

You don't think the market is there for a flight from HKG with maybe a stopover somewhere else or direct to IST?(range a problem?) I think IST is a missing destination in CX's network.
Same goes for SQ?

Hi Gokmengs,
HKG-IST around 5000 miles wouldn't be a problem for CX. Do you mean SQ to fly direct to IST instead of a stop in DBX?

My bad youare right HKG-IST is no problem, so why do they want to do it with a stop at DXB, when EK and SQ is already doing that? A non-stop could be very good for CX.
And yes I was asking about SIN-IST direct for SQ?

CX tried this route a few years ago but it was not so successful I guess they stopped it. I remember their beautiful 340s in IST.

BTW I guess SQ cannot full the plane without DXB stop. With a stop at DXB they are always full.

Being in the travel industry and a brother of a CX's local staff back then, I can tell CX's operation was quite successful.

Flights were suspended following 9/11 and they have not returned to ZRH, MAN and IST since then.

They are rather concentrated on other European Airports like FRA, LHR, AMS, CDG, FCO with more frequencies..

I being advices from a lot of CX insider in Hong Kong they were not doing well when operated HKG-IST non-stop, that's the main reason they suspended after 9/11. CX would like to return to IST anytime (Planned Oct 2005) via DXB with 5th freedom instead of non-stop.

Is there much legroom on these 777-300ER's?

I am flying from MEL to DXB then onto IST in June and would like to know if anyone has been on these planes and what to expect?

Thanks

I dont know the airline you'll fly and if there is any difference between 773s and 773ERs ragarding the legrooms.

When I flew them last summer Air France 773ER had the worst leg room on JFK-CDG, and I am 5-11. On the other hand, all cattle class are the same except TK 340s 34" makes a bit of a difference on long flights.
