Ryanair Online Check In?

Tue Mar 14, 2006 4:04 am

Hi,

Ryanair is supposed to introduce online check in this thursday, but except in the news report back in december, there is no mention of it at all on their website. Even on the FAQ where there is a whole section on check in, there is no mention.

I assume they are still doing it? And how long before the flight will one be able to check in?

Cheers
Stephen

I think it becomes operational at the end of this month (26th IIRC). I don't think FR would publicise it before it is operational, as there is no point and it would just confuse people, leading to customer service having to deal with 'why can't I find online check in' emails.

In the news release on their website it says:

Quote:
From the 16th March, Ryanair will introduce a number of key service improvements for all passengers including

(2) all passengers travelling with hand luggage and in possession of an EU passport will be able to check-in on the web at www.ryanair.com and by-pass all check-in and airport queues, (3) these passengers will also be given priority boarding which will also eliminate boarding gate queues as well

But you would have thought that they would advertise it more - as that news release is the only mention of it. For example when you book, it tells you that you should check in 2 hours before or whatever, maybe they could say "if travelling after 16th march....etc."

Those people who don't search throught the news pages and booked flights for after the introduction are likely to be unaware of the feature and would still use the normal check in

I think that that is exactly the meaning with this. A new service that could be tested with only a limited number of passengers. If RyanAir tries to open this service at 100% from the beginning, they will most likely run into trouble. Now they have the possibility to try and correct their mistakes (they will come, be sure!!) with a low number of passengers, which is both cheaper and simpler.

I'm not sure if this will be 100% legal as many many MANY EU citizens do NOT need a passport to travel.

Then you can
a) get a passport (16€) when your national ID card should be (IS) enough
b) pay-per-bag at check-in, more expensive than through the web

Many others force EU passenger to obtain a passport when it's not needed

AF Cityjet For Travel to/from Continental Europe on CityJet operated services a valid passport is required

Eurostar train Do I need a passport or identity card to travel?
All passengers, including infants, are required to have either their own valid passport. (or national identity card for French and Belgium passengers)

amongst others.....

Ryanair has benefit from EU open-skies laws... I just hope they allow passengers to benefit from EU laws as well

I always travel with my railcard when i'm flying Ryanair to Ireland. I only take my passport when i need it. I doubt they'll challenge you, baring in mind the only time they will need to check ID will be at the gate, rather than at check in. And at the gate they don't really check where the boarding pass has come from.

Strangely, yesterday morning (20th) the link was available and you were able to check-in online. Yesterday afternoon they removed the link and now there is no sign of it. Strange. They must be having some technical problems with the system.

Anyone got an update?

Off topic, but I believe my Finnish ID card cost me 40EUR as did the passport. You guys are getting a much better deal! Big grin

And the damn passport is broken again - first one lasted 3 years, this one only 2.

I was assuming that it would be an option inside the passenger's online travel document, but i went on the page for my flight to Shannon next monday and there is no mention. So i assume it only appears when the check in is available for the flight (72 hours before). It is mentioned in the FAQ, but there is no mention of when it is/was available to use.

I hope its available by April 5th, because i won't have time to check in at the airport for my flight, thanks to the inconvenience of getting to Stansted from the south.

There is a button on the top right corner of the homepage, for the online check in. Seems pretty straight forward and i hope it is successful.

Doesn't appear to work for all routes yet - BLK is unavailable as a Check 'n Go start point.

Yeah just noticed i won't be able to use it for my Gatwick-Shannon flight or my Frankfurt-Stansted flight. Thankfully i will be able to use it from Stansted which was when i would really need it.

A superior system in operation with Ryanair than with easyJet for one simple reason. Those FR passengers who check-in on line will be given boarding priority at the gate, whereby easyPax will be assigned "Boarding Group D"! Boarding group D being the fourth line in which you must stand at the departure gate while rows A, B & C take their seats! A bad move for U2 which I'm of the opinion should be rectified as soon as possible in order that the obvious comparison between the too cannot be highlighted to the detriment of easyJet.

A poor show from U2 if their system remains "as is".

Pleased it's finally up and running, at last.

Although Liverpool isn't available for online check-in as of yet which is surprising as it's quite a large base.

I agree, I recently used easyJet, and I didn't use online check in, simply because of the D factor. I always use it when flying with BA. It doesn't make sense. If they want people to use OLCI, then give them a reason to do so - priority boarding. If they don't show up on time, tough, because only pax with hand luggage can use the service anyway.

Do you think the other airports will become available soon or not? I could really benefit from using the service at Gatwick, so i could get there and go straight to the gate.

Ryanair have now listed the airport's where online check-in is available.

Routes where online check in is available.

Still quite a few bases not available for online check-in as of yet. There excuse being "If your route is not listed above we are unable to offer Online Check-in at this time." "Your particular airport cannot fully facilitate this service." It looks like online check-in might not be available in those few bases for some time yet.
