How To Get From PDX To RAP?

Tue Mar 14, 2006 10:07 am

Just wondering, what is a cost-effective way to get from PDX to RAP (Rapid City, SD) by air? An aircraft rental is out of my budget for such a long leg  Wink Driving is out of the question, as it would take at least two days each way, and my wife and I only get 1 week worth of vacation time this summer.

Thank you!

There is always Greyhound; $79 with a 7 day advance purchase, a 1 1/2 trip and the bonus of meeting interesting people. Less than half the airfare. Or fly to Denver and rent a car.

Well in terms of flying, DL via SLC or UA via DEN are probably the most logical choice. But you'd have to check their websites or a site like Orbitz or Travelocity to find out the $$$.

There's always hitchhiking. That could be an experience.  Smile

Or, if you want to overfly and backtrack, NW all the way. At least chances are good its mainline jets the whole way!

As for Greyhound, that is an experience. Last Wed prior to Thanksgiving Day, took them Portland-Boise. Only took 11hrs, 10 min. Looooong day! Only reason was for shut down BOI and I worked T- Day.

I went to a wedding in RAP in August 2004, and I saved a considerable amount of money by flying QX nonstop PDX-BIL, and then renting a car and driving to RAP. I thought it was a great way to do it, if you have the time.

Have you considered Allegiant from LAS-RAP? Two days a week service, and the fares are low, most are only $69 each way LAS-RAP.

You'd also have to book PDX-LAS on someone else, but those fares are usually not too bad.

Well, considering Allegiant's aggressive growth plans...they may be in Salem by the time you need to go....but is a connection even possible on Allegiant?

You should be able to drive it in less than two days, but it's pretty grueling, I agree.
