Halifax Airport: Shut It Down!

Tue Jun 06, 2000 2:43 am

Halifax, the gateway to Canada? I don't think so, look at their airport, it isn't any good. It's very small and has only 1 international airline (Icelandair). Only a few million passengers go there per year (3 million to be exact), and this is the gateway to Canada. This is a discrace. It's ugly and it's very far from the city. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets shut down. Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are the gateways to Canada, not Halifax.

What do you think?

Halifax International Airport is a fine facility serving as a hub for the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Three million passengers? Not bad! I have been through there three times, myself! For those who enjoy seafood, you can pick up fresh lobster at the airport. They will pack it for you for shipping, too! I look forward to visiting Victoria Airport this July!

It is also an essential airport for emergency diversions on ETOPs North Atlantic flights...

Look at how many in flight diversions use Halifax..

Someone with a username YYJ saying YHZ is too small to continue... oh bitter irony... YYJ is what, about 20% of the size of YHZ?

Besides, just because YYZ, YUL and YVR are big, the fact is that without smaller airports feeding them they'd be pretty sad...

I also believe you forgot the Air Canada flight to LHR.

Shut down any city's airport, especially one for a city the size of Halifax (metro pop. 330,000), and with no international flights and no domestic flights to the rest of the country, you can count on the city's economy being wrecked in the long run.

Besides, Halifax is already a regional hub for the Maritimes. There's also a reason they built the airport farther inland - coastal fog, which happens quite a bit in the Maritimes and can be thick enough to pose a serious hazard for aircraft. This way, they don't have to close the airport as often because of fog.

I can honestly say that this is the most hilariously stupid post I've seen in over a month!

Shut down YHZ! HA!

Think before you post buddy.

YYJ: I know exactly why you want YHZ shut down: You heard through your very reliable grape vine that Continental will fly their 777 to Halfax instead of Victoria ... isn't that right? Its jealousy that's eating you not the airport.

Jim

P.S. I was being sarcastic

P.S.S. Closing an airport because its ugly is like selling your house because you don't like the carpet. Come on!

I have relatives in N.S. who visit us frequently, and they fly out of the Halifax airport whenever they come visit. If it weren't for this airport, they'd have to take a ferry to get to the next closest airport on the mainland, and chances are they wouldn't come down quite a frequently.

CV990A, Nova Scotia is on the mainland... I think you're thinking of Newfoundland, which is an island, or maybe Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia?

YYJ, do you ever have anything intelligent to say? Do you ever think before you post?

Halifax is one of the few international airports in North America with no noise abatement (at least not paranoid noise abatement) procedures as do every other large airport on the continent. It is a 30 minute drive to downtown Halifax via the MacKay bridge. Try driving to downtown Toronto from Pearson in anything less than two hours.

Canada 3000 also uses CYHZ staging to/from Europe. It can be a very busy place.

Best Regards,

Buff
