Near Mid-Air Collision @ FLL

Wed Mar 15, 2006 3:55 am

I was riding down 595 and watching the planes on approach. I noticed a Spirit A321 on final with gear down. I kept watching the plane as it continued it's descent (pretty close to the airport) when suddenly it pitched up at a very steep angle and turned away and raised gear. As soon as the plane turned off, out comes a small private biz jet out of nowhere...right on the path of the A321. So, the A321 continued climbing away from the airport and eventually started doing a U turn to get back into approach path. Pretty wild to see. Something similar like that happened when I was driving down Southern Blvd and saw a US 734 on final for PBI which did the SAME THING because of a small plane coming very close to it. Thankfully, both incidents were luckily without injuries.

Also, I saw an Emirates A310 on the ramp at FLL....off to the side by a hangar. WHat is it doing there? Could it be an ex-Emirates plane? I didn't have a chance to see the actual name but the livery of the plane was DEFINETLY Emirates. Anyone know what's up?

Pretty scary incident, but like fairly common with GA. Anyway, what time did you see that Emirates 310 on the ground? I am in Delray, but want to drive down to FLL before I go into work at 6 to grab a photo. I work near FXE, so luckily it isn't that far out of the way. Thanks!

I drove by around 10 a.m. Like I said, the tail was DEFINETLY Emirates livery and the plane is an A310. Also, should be easy to get great shots of it since it is parked close to the viewing area.

This was mentioned in another thread - it was a freighter.

Ed, based on your description, it sounds as if the bizjet probably just took more time on the runway before takeoff than the local controller had anticipated, and the controller probably told the NK 321 to "go around" since traffic was still on the runway. This isn't anything too out of the ordinary, and I wouldn't even go so far as to call it a near mid-air collision. Calling for a go-around is just a safety precaution to ensure that both aircraft do not breach the mininum separation criteria set forth by the FAA, and also to ensure that a "runway incursion" does not take place.

If you ever get a chance to spend some time at the viewing area there, you might actually get to overhear one on the loudspeaker . . . and come to the realization that 99 times out of 100, the only thing that's REALLY in jeopardy during a go-around are the passengers' connections. Big grin

Back in the late 90s I was flying out of DCA on a USAirways 737. We were cleared onto the runway for a southerly takeoff in cloudy conditions with a low ceiling. Within a few seconds we rolled forward and then quickly exited the runway to the right. I was in a window seat on the right side of the plane. About 10 seconds after we exited the runway, a TWA 727 slammed down a hard landing at the exact location we were holding. It seemed dramatic at the time, and left me with an interesting "near miss" story to tell my friends, but in the scheme of things, I think this sort of thing happens more often than the average flier thinks.

The bizjet was flying TOWARDS the A321. As in, in the same path as the Airbus. Like I said in my thread starter post, once the plane made the sharp turn, I was able to see the plane that was headed right into the path of the Airbus.

A go-around due to traffic on the runway is pretty ordinary. However, a plane making a steep climb and turn all of the sudden because of a plane headed RIGHT towards them is serious and I would call it a near mid-air collision. Had both planes stayed on the same course, they would of collided.

the bizjet was probably on VFR...but very scary nonetheless...sad to see that the SOFL skies are really getting crowded.

On a side note...I know it's hard, I have a hard time doing it on 595...but KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD!  Wink

I don't think it's sad though. I mean, it is pretty crazy to see how many lights are on approach to FLL at once during late afternoon/early evening hours....I LOVE it though...hehe

Actually, I was the passenger this time which is why I was able to see all the action non-stop. Although, even while driving, I am always looking away to see what A/C's are on final. I know, terrible thing especially since 595 is so crazy and congested.....but I can't help it!  Big grin

Oh...it's great...but I just remember back just 10 years ago when the skies were practically dead.

3 words: I hear ya!

I love driving on 595 between 95 and US1...but I just cannot do it!

Highly likely IFR, unless it was just going MIA or FXE. OPF etc.

If what you describe is true and they were taking-off opposite direction to landings, it's a recipe for disaster. I've seen too many 'close calls' where ATC tried to land or depart somebody the wrong way just to save a few minutes.

It honestly looked like the biz jet was taking off from another runway while the A321 was on final for the main runway. The reason I say that is because the biz jet was coming at the A321 from an angle...not head on. So I think it took off and turned right into the path of the A321 that was on finals.

Probably not, and in the FLL Class C, it wouldn't matter anyway.

Read KFLLCFII's good post for more information.
