US A330 At IND Today (14Mar06)?

Wed Mar 15, 2006 6:35 am

I was about 10 miles ESE of IND this afternoon shortly after noon local time. I looked up and saw an US Airways aircraft at about 3,000 MSL flying and what looked to be like about a 260 to 280 degree heading (towards the marker for runway 32). It was a twin and I could swear it had blended winglets like a A330. These winglets where not the ones on an A319 or A320. I have never seen an A340 or A330 at IND. Was this an anomaly, a regular flight, something special or was I seeing things? I believe the only aircraft US Airways flies with blended winglets are the A330s. Thanks,

David

US doesn't have an A340 which has 4 engines.

Perhaps a charter or diversion into IND?

Could it have been an USX EMB-170 possibly? While, yes, there is a drastic size difference between that and an A330, they share the same general configuration...twin engine low-wing with winglets, etc.

This flight from PIT to IND would be a USX EMB-170 arriving at IND at about the time you mentioned... and the flightaware trackmap puts its last course at about 320 which matches up with your sighting of it possibly being on approach for 32...

US A330 At IND Today (14Mar06)?

I didn't hear anything about an A330. It is possible as a charter or a diversion of some sort (although I can't imagine IND being a plausible alternate to PHL or CLT).

One thing is however that what gate could it use? None of US Airways gates can handle anything larger than a 757. There aren't many gates at all where you can park a widebody at IND. Half of the US Airways gates with jetbridges at IND are designed for nothing bigger than an E170. At least you get to use a jetbridge for your CRJ or ERJ flight at IND, but I don't know where an A330 could go.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

- Thank you, I was merely stating I have never seen an A330 or A340 at IND, I didn't say US had A340s.

- Thank you sir, I ought to check out that website sometime.

- What about the time when TZ still flew L1011s in and out of IND on routine revenue service? Granted they were in different concourses, but I doubt IND spent the money to replace the jetways when TZ pulled out.

Thank you for your answers.

Nothing changed when ATA pulled out. There are a few big problems at IND in regard to large jets. Because of how close the jetways are to each other it is difficult to get widebody jets like the L1011 in and have jets parked on either side of it. Another problem is room to push a jet of that size back without clipping a jet behind it or perhaps a barrier wall like in concourse A. Then of course there is the seating issue. Few gates have enough seating for 200+ pax at a single gate. The end of concourse C has the large circular room with plenty of seating. It also has room in areas for a large jet to be able to come to a jetway and be able to push back with the other jetways around it in use. There is room at C2 for a large jet but not enough seating. C10 is the best of all worlds.

If it was an A330, quite possibly it was on a charter for the Air Mobility Command, there are several flights over the weekend out of IND to "points beyond"

I think the most likely scenario is that it was going in to IND for maintenance.

This was the first thing I thought of but who does widebody mx in IND? I thought most of US's widebody mx was done by AC

Honestly I don't know what they work on now. Last time I flew in and out of IND I noticed a variety of jets sitting out there. But when I passed the building I was going a bit fast and didn't get a chance to study what was sitting out there  Smile

Prior to UA dumping the lease I had seen UA DC10's coming in for maintenance. But this goes back a number of years.

Anyone here work for AAR and can add some input as to what kind of jets get served?

On that note it could have been a sports charter. The Big 10 tournament was taking place around this time. There were some unusual flights here around that time. One of the flight trackers listed a USA3000 757 here though USA3000 doesn't list those as part of their fleet. This also may have been a charter. Sun Country was another airline that came here around the same time.

- When UA was still doing maintenance at IND, it was narrowbody only, specifically their 737 fleet. When UA retired their 727s, they first flew them all to IND for some reason and then took them places elsewhere, either parked them or sold them.

UA still has a big MX presence in IND. NW also has a big MX facility as well. CHQ S5 and RW all have MX facilities at IND as well.

They did widebody as well. I was at the airport (don't remember if I was the one traveling) and a UA DC10 came in and went over to that building. I don't know if widebody maintenance was common or not but it was done. I've seen them come in first hand.
