Construction Status Of T-New At YYZ

Thu Mar 16, 2006 12:32 am

Does anyone have a recent status update on the construction of new terminal at YYZ?
I've done some checking around at the following to gather tidbits of info.
It looks like some new gates are opening this spring, if so which ones? Will those gates be domestic or international?
Has the People mover operational yet or is it still in testing?

Does anyone have links to any new construction photo's as well?
The only good links i could find were at Urban DB

I did check the resources of this forum and could not find anything recent.

All very good questions and I hope someone can answer them better than I, as I can't!

However as to the People Mover, wasn't that originally supposed to be in operation in Fall 2005 then pushed back to Spring 2006? Well, even so, I have been out there frequently of late and I have not seen any indication it is even in testing yet, haven't even seen the cars on the elevated tracks. Anybody know if this is way off schedule too?

It wil link T1 New with T3 and the outer long term parking facility correct?

Well timed post from my point of view...

I taxied past the new terminal on Monday late at night, and I thought I saw some aircraft parked at the gates on the southern side of the first pier (though I could be wrong). Does anyone (at AC perhaps) know if there are additional gates open already?

Also, can anyone answer this quesiton: will T3 still be called T3 when there is no T2?

Depends on what GTAA wants to do. Some airports keep terminal numbering the same for historical reasons and some update it. PHX, which has no Terminal 1, is a good example of the former

There were 11 new gates that came online in the fall I believe. These are on the south side of the Domestic pier, and are International gates for the most part. They have allowed AC to move a lot of their flights from the In-Field terminal. The hammerhear pier is coming online in early 2007, but I believe T2 will still be handling some Transborder flights after that - potentially just for gating purposes.

I have seen the link trains moving around on the track - for testing purposes, not sure when it will be operational.

I know the plan is to move most of the international traffic from the Infield terminal to T1 by the summer. 10 or so gates opened a few months ago and most of them are being used by AC heavies.

By August, it should look like this.

That is from 2001, and plans were pushed almost 2 years post 9/11. Even when the hammerhead comes online, the left side of it won't be operational...similar to how the Domestic pier was when T1 opened.

If you look at the pictures from last August on this web site, you will see that they have apparently tied the left side of the hammer into the end of the old T2...

Presumably so that they can do as suggested by ChrisA330 in reply 5:

Think of it as how the IFT works now. Check in etc done at T1, then bussed to the aircraft at T2. There will be Transborder capability added in 2007, but apparently not enough to support AC/UA entire sked.

I wrote to GTAA a few months ago, pointing out that their published construction schedule was hopelessly out of date. They replied that they were revamping their website (www.gtaa.com). This they have now done - with out any construction schedule. There is a gallery of photos, but they are all dated July 2004. There is a Terminal diagram showing all the gates currently in use at T1.
I am on a mailing list with Brian Dunn of YYZ News. He sends out construction photos, taken from the T1 ramp tower about once every month or two. I have no way of uploading these pictures to this forum. I suppose I could e-mail a selection to anybody really interested.

Not so. There is now about a hundred yard gap between the left side of the hammerhead and the truncated end of T2

What is your source for this, and do your mean Pier 'F' or just the actual hammerhead on the end? Gates are already being installed on both sides of Pier 'F'

I meant pier F, but in re-reading the info I had seen, I have to retract that statement! 23 gates in 2007, but not enough for all transborder ops.

I travelled from YYZ last year around September with LH and while on the transit bus from the infield terminal to the main terminal I remember I saw some aircrafts parked at the new section of the terminal. It seems like a few gates have already been completed and are in use. I dont really know how much more has been done since.
Another question I have had is that will the Infield terminal continue to be used by Air Canada for their long haul and the other Star Alliance airlines after the main terminal is completed?
Who will be using it after comletion of T1?

You all have parts of the story; let me give you the whole thing straight from the GTAA (This takes a while). We are doing a similar thing as to what we did when old T1 closed/New T1 opened. On January 31st, 2007 at Midnight, we close Terminal 2 (main building) and all the access roads leading there (including the parking garage). The only gates that remain open are the East Holdroom gates (T2 Satellite), and passengers are bussed there from the bus lobbies at Node F. Gates 144, 145, & 138 become Domestic gates, while gates 132, 134, 136, 151, 153, 155, & 157 become Transborder(these gates are where the AC international flights depart from now). Gates 160-167 (first 8 Pier F gates), as well as gate 191 (one gate on the liner on the other side of Pier F) also become Transborder. Gates 170-181 (Hammerhead F gates) become the only devoted international flight gates. Gates 168 & 169 (last two gated on Pier F) can be either Transborder or International as they have barriers that can be closed on either side (they will be used as transborder except during peak international traffic periods).

On the note of the Infield Terminal, the plan is to not use it except in cases of extreme gate demand. Because of the move to the Hammerhead, we will have the room to park 10 widebodies of 747 size next to each other. Any flights that have to be parked at the IFT will have their pax bussed there from a new lobby built into the far end of Pier F.

As for the APM, I don't know. I'm not priveleged to the data on that, but I know it is nearing completion of testing and should be online by my next flight out of YYZ on Canada Day (to Indianapolis for F1 Race). If anybody needs clarification just ask. Sorry for blabbering, but this is my first post...

Welcome to the forum, CNZ3. I assume from your forum name you are from Southwestern Ontario. That information is very useful, but would be even more helpful if one had a diagram showing the pier 'F' gate numbers.

Sorry about that. I wasn't thinking that people might not know what the hell I'm talking about. Here are some images I made from the CAD files I have:

PS: In regards to your question, John/Olympus69, I grew up in Chatham and now reside in the GTA. Chatham-Kent Municipal (CNZ3) was where I saw my first plane, so I figured it was an appropriate username.

CNZ3,

Thanks for the info on the gates, that was a lot more info than I expected.
When T-new is completed, will you have to clear Canada Customs still if you are flight that is transiting YYZ. Will all the passengers just re-clear security and let back into the secure area? For instance NRT > YYZ > GRU and vice versa?
How will the GTAA be handling trans border ops, for instance ORD > YYZ > PVG?

Regards

Thanks for those great diagrams, Steve. I have downloaded all of them for future reference. Perhaps you could answer a question - is T1 A380 compatible?

OK:

YYZYYT - Thanks!

Olympus69 - T1 will be A380 capable. Gates 173 & 175 on Hammerhead F have 3 jetways per, so we are capable of handling a grand total of two A380's (although doing such will probably end up with some non-AC international flights being moved to the IFT).

ZBA2CGX - T1 was designed for ease of use by International pax connecting to US destinations and vice versa. There is an area right before the Customs Hall where pax with International connections will split off and present their boarding cards for their next flight. They will then join the regular flow of departing International passengers. The downside of this is that for an International pax connecting to an international flight, you'll be walking the entire length of Pier F TWICE (if the moving walks are not working). At least you'll get your exercise between those long flights!
