Close Calls, Anyone?

Thu Mar 16, 2006 3:30 am

The thread about the near collision @ FLL got me thinking (and remembering); Has anyone been involved in a close call regarding aviation?

I remember back in 1980, I was in the right seat of a Rockwell 114 (My friend was the pilot, I was along for the ride), 10:00 at night, on Final Approach into San Jose. Everything is great when the ATC asks my pilot to switch off and on his landing lights. He complies. We then hear ATC tell a twin engine to climb and go around. I look up out the windshield, and as god is my witness, a twin engine plane is about 40' directly above us. We were both coming in on the same runway at the same time.

After we were on the ground, pilot admitted to me, "That was close".

Stories anyone?
I've got things to see and people to do.

I fly out of an uncontrolled field - KHWV - Brookhaven. Over the summer, it gets very busy.
Over the summers, there are glider ops, banner tows, the two flight schools and the old timers who haven't flown since last year. It can get very very very crowded.
I was once on downwind with a friggin helicopter flying across the pattern at 800'. We were descending from 1000' as he scooped by.

Mine didn't occur in the traffic pattern but in level flight. A medevac helicopter was climbing in the opposite direction that I was headed in a Bonanza. The helicopter was not visible to us because of its color against the ground and its location. It quickly popped into sight of the left seat pilot who calmly announced "hellicopter on the left." I turned my head just in time to see a helicopter whiz by at about 300+ kts closure and about 200 feet off of our left wing. I'm sure the helicopter had us on TCAS the entire time and with 200ft clearance it wasn't really that close of a call, but at that speed and with that little reaction time it sure got my heart beating.
