Air Berlin To Start STN-ZRH?

Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:55 am

Just wondering if anybody has heard much about the rumours of AB starting a STN-ZRH service? Is it likely to happen in your opinion?

Donder10,

Could well be, as they're making both STN and ZRH a hub at present, and connecting two hubs is a smart move  Smile

(funny username you have, you happen to be ex-Dutch ?)
don't throw away tomorrow !

It would be very good news if they did. As far as I know, there are no LCC flights from ZRH to anywhere in the UK.

Would be very good news...since the cheapest way to ZRH from LHR at the moment is 100 pounds (maybe you can get somewhat cheaper from LGW)...a few years back there used to be flights from 80 pounds on BA and LX...LCC is desperately needed...

Not true. Helvetic (2L) flies twice a day to London Luton.

The question is only if Helvetic (Ebnair (sorry, couldn't resist)) is a LCC especially after the things Martin Ebner (the new important shareholder of Helvetic) said in interviews about fare raises.

By the way. Nice to see you ZRH here back on a.net.

I don't think Helvetic are doing too good on the LTN -ZRH route...

I read in another thread that Helvetic were only managing 20-30 passengers on the flights.

With their prices they can barely call themselves a LCC, when I have looked into fares on the route they are usually over 100 Euro's each way plus tax.

Now am I completely wrong here or is it that there are already AB flights ZRH-STN-ZRH?

ZRH-STN AB8119
STN-ZRH AB8747 & AB8229
Excess baggage? Oh come on...

No. These flights have have the "via" marking. And the flight time suggests as well that it can not be direct. I suppose it's via DUS but I'm not sure on this.
On the Air Berlin page I find no information when this flight starts. Only the information on the coming flights to FRA and FCO.

I think the current offe is a "via"-connection.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a ZRH-STN by AB, although competition is strong on the London route. Helvetic is no competition and AB would give them the final blow on this route. And don't forget LX which is offering very low prices to Heathrow for early bookers.

No wonder Helvetic are suffering with poor loads. I've never heard of them and have never seen them advertise the route!

There was a time when U2 operated LTN and LGW out of ZRH. If only ZRH had agreed on airport taxes cut that U2 proposed, there would be a huge U2 network in ZRH now !(U2 went to BSL instead).

So I wish good luck to AB...

Yeah, that's indeed a bit irritating. On their route map, the flight shows as direct. Also, the flight number AB8119 suggests it is direct.

So maybe somebody with experience on this route. Are they just making a stop somewhere or do you really need to change planes?

Zurich is obviously marketed in Northern Europe as a "via DUS" destination. Saw the other week Air Berlin adverts in Helsinki offering HEL-ZRH (via DUS). Same should apply to CPH and STN.

Does anyone have the CAA statistics for the route?

Helevetic have chopped a lot of routes recently and reduced their fleet but the LTN service has remained. It cant be doing that badly

According to CAA there are between 30 and 40 passengers per flight. Would be cheaper to use an ATR or Saab  Wink

Even worse if you consider that they need to sell 10% of the seats for the lowest advertised price (that is 1 Euro or 19Euro). So the first passengers go for 1 Euro (or 19?) and the most others for 29 and 39 Euros.

I really cannot see where they want to earn money on that route. And if this is really one of their better routes then good night Helvetic.

That's exactly what they are doing tomorrow on the flights to LTN and PMI with an Darwin aircraft.

It must be costing them a bit to charter the aircraft
